Peru's mysterious Nazca Lines form a labyrinth

Some of the Nazca Lines, mysterious geoglyphs that span a vast swath of the rugged Peruvian desert, may have once been a labyrinth with a spiritual purpose, a new study suggests.

The new insight, published in the December issue of the journal Antiquity, came because two archaeologists decided to use a decidedly low-tech method to understand the sand drawing's ancient secrets: by walking it.

At the time the Nazca Lines, which span 85 square miles (220 square kilometers), were drawn, "people were not looking at this stuff from the air, they were looking at stuff from the ground level," said Timothy Ingold, a cultural anthropologist at the University of Aberdeen, who was not involved in the study. "To appreciate what they might have meant to ordinary people, then you have to walk them."

While that seems like an obvious first step, in actuality, very few archaeologists have studied the Nazca Lines from that vantage point, because most of the pictures drawn out by the lines are only visible from foothills above or from space. ['Nazca Lines': Aerial Photos Reveal Mysterious Stone Structures]

The Nazca Lines have been a mystery since they were first discovered in the 1920s by Peruvian archaeologist Toribio Mej?a Xesspe. Long-forgotten people from the Nasca culture created the drawings between 200 B.C. and A.D. 500 by brushing away the dark top layer of barren desert to reveal the light, sandy soil underneath, wrote Clive Ruggles, an archaeologist from the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, in an email. The dry, windless climate has preserved most of the carvings ? hundreds of depictions of animal shapes such as jaguars and monkeys, as well as geometric designs ? to this day.

But just why ancient people created the Nazca Lines has been an enduring mystery: Some archaeologists have suggested it was an alien landing strip, a primitive sun calendar, or an irrigation system.

"There is no simple answer. Different geoglyphs were clearly created over a significant period of time and almost certainly had a variety of meanings and purposes," Ruggles wrote.

Concerns about degradation of the mysterious geoglyphs prevented most traffic through the region since the 1990s. But when Ruggles and Aberdeen colleague Nicholas Saunders came upon a previously undiscovered set of lines north of the Nazca desert in 1984, they wondered whether the geoglyphs might reveal their secrets from a more terrestrial point of view.

Starting in 2007, Ruggles and Saunders spent 150 days walking 932 miles (1,500 kilometers) of the ancient carvings. They found the newly uncovered geoglyph was a single line that radiated out in a mystifying, confusing pattern, with a series of sharp, disorienting turns leading up to a mound whose purpose remains unknown. What's more, the meandering line was in pristine condition, leading the archaeologists to conclude that the paths that were carved out were rarely, if ever, used.

Many labyrinths have a spiritual purpose, so one possibility is that the paths weren't walked at all, but instead were intended for the passage of gods or spirits, Ruggles wrote. For instance, in the 5th century B.C. Herodotus mentions a vast Egyptian labyrinth that served as a mortuary temple, while the Hopi indians saw labyrinths as symbols of Mother Earth.

The researchers note this is still just speculation, Ingold told LiveScience.

"We still have absolutely no idea what these people were doing or what the point of it was," Ingold said.

New Mothers May Watch Their Debt Differently | The Board Magazine

New mothers have a lot of things to worry about, but payday loans shouldn?t be one of them. Preparing for the arrival of a new baby is a challenge, mentally, physically, and financially. Adding the stress of repaying a payday advance to an already worrisome situation is a recipe for disaster. However, women in the 24-40 year old demographic?an age group that corresponds with the childbearing years?are the most likely to utilize payday loan services. Women in this age group may be more likely to utilize payday lender services for a variety of reasons.

The combination of limited work hours and the high costs of caring for an infant is bound to financially challenge many mothers, especially if they are raising said child on their own. Such financial hardship makes them strong candidates for payday loan usage, as they need to care for their children yet don?t always have the means to do so. Raising a child is expensive, and the first year may be the most costly of all. Buying clothes, diapers, food, strollers, furniture, car seats, and baby proofing one?s house are just a few of the expenses associated with the stork?s arrival. Clearly, new mothers have a lot of expenses to juggle, and doing so with a brand new baby is not an easy task. Some preventive measures can be taken, however, to keep a new mom out of the payday loan office.

*Refurbish old furniture and save on decorating the nursery. One of the best things about decorating for a baby is that you can have a lot of fun with it. Have an old, worn dresser or armoire in your house? Paint it a kid friendly color and change out the hardware to make it a new, individualized, and fun nursery piece. A can of paint and a few nobs are much cheaper than the interest on a payday loan, not to mention the cost of buying a new piece of furniture.

*Shop at thrift stores and yard sales for lightly-used strollers, car seats, high chairs, and furniture. Babies grow fast; thus, the aforementioned items are often only used for a brief period of time before the baby has outgrown them. By purchasing these items pre-owned, a new mom can save money while contributing to another family. The family who is selling the item could likely use the extra income too, thus the purchase is a win-win.

*Don?t be too proud to take hand me downs from family and friends. Baby clothes get little wear, as the little ones grow so quickly. If you have a friend or family member with old clothes they are willing to donate, take them. Doing so will free up some storage space in the friends/families house and keep your baby snug and fashionable without breaking the bank.

*Have a baby shower with a diaper raffle. A baby shower is a great environment to share with your friends and family the love and excitement that a new baby brings. Along with gifts of clothes and baby necessities, baby showers give a new mom the chance to acquire diapers, which are unbelievably expensive. Have a diaper raffle at your shower, wherein each guest gets a raffle ticket for each pack of diapers that they bring. Whoever wins the raffle receives a nice gift, like a dinner gift certificate or massage. The cost of the gift will be far less than the cost of the diapers and save the new mom a bundle.

By following these tips, a new mom can avoid payday loans and provide for her new addition. When a little extra cash in needed, getting a payday loan may be fastest and easiest. Keep in mind, the money you borrow is expected to be paid back with your next paycheck. Most new moms are still at home with their baby and may not have the proper source of income to be in a borrowing position.

(AP) ? The Boston Red Sox are pursuing another burly right-hander to shore up their bullpen.

A person familiar with the talks said the Red Sox and Pirates are close to completing a trade that would send All-Star closer Joel Hanrahan to Boston for a handful of prospects.

Pittsburgh would ship Hanrahan and another player to the Red Sox in exchange for four players, including outfielder-first baseman Jerry Sands and minor league pitcher Stolmy Pimentel. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Saturday because the trade was pending physicals and had not been finalized.

The deal was previously reported by several media outlets.

The 31-year-old Hanrahan has been one of baseball's best closers the last two years, saving 76 games from 2011-12 and making the NL All-Star team in both seasons. He made $4,135,000 this year and is eligible for arbitration, putting him in line for a hefty raise.

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Hanrahan and his 96 mph fastball gave the Pirates stability at the back end of the bullpen after he took over the closer's role full-time in 2011. He helped the Pirates post a 22-game improvement from 2010 to 2012. Pittsburgh went 79-83 this year, tied for the franchise's best record in two decades ? though it was still the team's 20th straight losing season.

Jason Grilli, re-signed by the Pirates this month, would likely step into the closer role next year.

The Red Sox hope Hanrahan will be able to give their beleaguered bullpen an identity. Boston slumped to a 69-93 record in 2012 thanks in part to a bullpen that struggled after closer Jonathan Papelbon left for Philadelphia in free agency. Fill-in Alfredo Aceves went 2-10 with a 5.36 ERA and eight blown saves in 33 chances as the Red Sox finished last in the AL East.

Hanrahan would team with 28-year-old righty Andrew Bailey to give the Red Sox a potent 1-2 punch in the late innings. Bailey was expected to be the closer last season but he missed most of the year with an injury. He finished 1-1 with six saves and a 7.04 ERA in 19 games for the Red Sox after spending 2009-11 as the closer in Oakland.

The move could also be a one-year experiment if the Red Sox don't sign Hanrahan to a new contract. He can become a free agent after the 2013 season.

The Pirates would get a potential slugger in the 25-year-old Sands, who hit 296 with 26 home runs and 107 RBIs at Triple-A last season. He came to the Red Sox in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers and his bat and versatility could make Pittsburgh first baseman-outfielder Garrett Jones expendable. Jones hit a career-high 27 home runs in 2012, when he made $2.25 million, and he will be eligible for arbitration after next season. The Pirates already have a first baseman in place in Gaby Sanchez, who came over in a trade with the Miami Marlins last season.

The proposed trade caps a busy few days for the Pirates, who have agreed in principal to sign former Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox left-hander Francisco Liriano. The $14 million, two-year deal is pending a physical.

Liriano would give Pittsburgh four experienced starters heading into 2013, joining A.J. Burnett, Wandy Rodriguez and James McDonald. The 29-year-old Liriano is 53-54 with a 4.40 ERA in seven major league seasons. He went 6-12 with a 5.34 ERA in 2012 while splitting the season between the Twins and White Sox.

Consumer spending rises by most in three years

1 day

Consumer spending rose in November by the most in three years and a gauge of planned business spending jumped, signs that households and companies are shrugging off some of the fears tighter fiscal policy could cause a recession.?

The Commerce Department said on Friday inflation-adjusted consumer spending rose 0.6 percent, while after-tax income climbed 0.8 percent when adjusting for changes in prices.?

Many economists think business and consumers are wary of automatic government spending cuts and tax increases scheduled to kick in early next year, a scenario known in Washington as the "fiscal cliff."?

"The economy is holding in here at the end of the year despite the concerns about the fiscal cliff," said Gary Thayer, an economic strategist at Wells Fargo Advisors in St. Louis.?

Economists have been expecting economic growth will slow in the fourth quarter as companies slow the pace at which they re-stock their shelves, but the data on spending suggests consumers are offsetting some of that drag.?

Consumer spending grew at just a 1.6 percent annual rate in the third quarter. Real spending declined in October, but November's gain was the strongest since August 2009.?

That suggested purchases by consumers were not taking the hit many expected due to growing fears that going over the fiscal cliff will push the economy into recession. However, consumer confidence declined sharply in early December.?

Late on Thursday, a Republican proposal for averting the fiscal cliff was abandoned, further eroding optimism that a deal would be reached quickly.?

U.S. stocks were sharply lower after the proposal was dropped.?

Spending before taking into account changes in prices rose 0.4 percent. Economists polled by Reuters had expected nominal consumer spending would rise 0.3 percent last month.?

In a separate Commerce Department report, a gauge of planned U.S. business spending rose much more than expected in November, a hint that worries over tighter fiscal policy may not be holding back the factory sector as much as feared.?

Non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for investment plans, jumped 2.7 percent last month, the second straight month of solid gains.?

Economists had expected so-called core capital goods orders to rise just 0.3 percent. The reading for October was upwardly revised to a 3.2 percent gain from a previously reported 2.9 percent increase.?

Shipments of non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, used to calculate equipment and software spending in the gross domestic product report, gained 1.8 percent.?

Many economists believe businesses, wary of the fiscal cliff, have been cutting back on capital spending.?

Going over the cliff could drain about $600 billion from an already fragile economy.?

Overall durable goods orders rose 0.7 percent in November, with increases posted for machinery, fabricated metal products, and computer and electronic products offsetting a drag from aircraft.?

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast orders for durable goods, items from toasters to aircraft that are meant to last at least three years, rising 0.2 percent last month.?

Excluding transportation, orders rose 1.6 percent in November. Transport orders were down 1.1 percent. Previously, U.S. manufacturer Boeing reported new orders for its aircraft fell in November to 124 from 152 in the prior month.?

New orders for autos jumped 3.5 percent. U.S. auto sales in November raced to a five-year high for that month on a rebound from storm-ravaged October and the need to replace aging vehicles.?

The Commerce Department gave no indication that Superstorm Sandy, which lashed the East Coast in late October, had any impact on either of the economic reports.?

South Africa's Mandela has "steadily improved": Zuma

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Nelson Mandela, the 94-year-old former South African leader who has spent nearly two weeks in hospital, is steadily improving and responding well to treatment, current President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday.

"His condition was serious, but he is responding well to treatment, and has steadily improved over the last few days," Zuma said at the close of a week-long leadership conference of the ruling African National Congress.

The country's first black president was admitted to a Pretoria hospital on December 8 after being flown from his home village of Qunu in a remote part of the Eastern Cape province.

He was treated initially for a recurrent lung infection and then had a successful procedure to have gallstones removed.

Obama: 'Words need to lead to action' on gun control

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Spurred by a horrific elementary school shooting, President Barack Obama tasked his administration Wednesday with creating concrete proposals to reduce gun violence that has plagued the country.

"This time, the words need to lead to action," said Obama, who set a January deadline for the recommendations. He vowed to push for their implementation without delay.

The president, who exerted little political capital on gun control during his first term, also pressed Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004. He also called for stricter background checks for people who seek to purchase weapons and limited high capacity clips.

"The fact that this problem is complex can no longer be an excuse for doing nothing," Obama said. "The fact that we can't prevent every act of violence doesn't mean we can't steadily reduce the violence."

Obama's announcement Wednesday underscores the urgency the White House sees in formulating a response to the shooting in Newtown, Conn. Twenty children and six adults were killed when a man carrying a military-style rifle stormed an elementary school.

The massacre has prompted several congressional gun rights supporters to consider new legislation to control firearms, and there is some concern that their willingness to engage could fade as the shock and sorrow over the Newtown shooting eases.

Obama said Wednesday it was "encouraging" to see people of different backgrounds and political affiliations coming to an understanding that the country has an obligation to prevent such violence.

Appealing to gun owners, Obama said he believes in the Second Amendment and the country's strong tradition of gun ownership. And he said "the vast majority of gun owners in America are responsible."

The president tasked Vice President Joe Biden with leading the administration-wide effort to create new gun control policies. Obama also wants his team to consider ways to improve mental health resources and address ways to create a culture that doesn't promote violence.

The departments of Justice, Education, Health and Human Services, and Homeland Security will all be part of the process.

Biden's prominent role in the process could be an asset for the White House in getting gun legislation through Congress. The vice president spent decades in the Senate and has been called on by Obama before to use his long-standing relationships with lawmakers to build support for White House measures.

The high cost of motherhood worldwide

OECD

In most countries, there's a gap between men's and women's earnings, and it grows when women have children.

By Allison Linn, TODAY

Motherhood has many rewards, but as many women already know, they aren?t usually the financial kind.

A new and comprehensive look at how much money 25- to 44-year-olds earn finds that women of that age earn less than men worldwide, and the gap between men?s and women?s pay grows considerably wider when just comparing moms and dads.

The Organization for Cooperation and Development looked at the wage gap among men and women in its 34 member countries. On average across the countries, they found that median earnings for women who worked full-time were 16 percent less than men working full-time.

That?s actually 4 percentage point improvement over 2000, the researchers said. Most of the improvement came between 2000 and 2005.

The report found that the gap grew much wider for people in their mid-20s through mid-40s who also were raising children ages 15 and under. Median wages for moms in that situation were 22 percent less than dads in that situation.

For people who weren?t raising children, there also was a wage gap, but it was much smaller. Women of that age without kids made 7 percent less than dads without kids.

In a handful of countries, including Ireland and Australia, the women without kids were actually earning slightly more, on average, than the men without kids.

The comparisons were among full-time workers, but the report noted that women ? and especially mothers - are much more likely to work part-time. Many women choose to work part-time so they can have more time for family, but the report noted that it?s tougher to find secure, career-track employment at a part-time job.

In a statement accompanying the report?s release, OECD officials argued that things like high child care costs are keeping some women from working as many hours as they might like, or from pursuing certain careers. They said that, in turn, could end up stifling some economic growth.

?Closing the gender gap must be a central part of any strategy to create more sustainable economies and inclusive societies,? OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurr?a said in a statement.

Worldwide, many women have risen to positions of great power in recent years.

In Europe, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is one of the world?s most powerful politicians. And in the United States women including Yahoo! Chief Executive Melissa Mayer have come to command a lot of sway among business leaders.

Still, most top positions are still held by men, and the OECD report noted that the wage gap was wider, on average, at the top of the pay scale.

In the United States, the gap between men?s and women?s earnings has remained little changed even as wages have fallen for everyone because of the recession and weak recovery.? The median earnings for women who worked full-time and year-round were 77 cents for every dollar a man earned in 2011, according to the latest Census data.

White House: Gun violence is complex problem

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House says curbing gun violence is a complex problem that will require a "comprehensive solution" including addressing gun control measures.

Still, spokesman Jay Carney says gun control is not the only solution to stopping shootings like the horrific attack at a Connecticut elementary school Friday. He says no single piece of legislation or single action will fully address the problem.

Obama has said he is going to use the "power" of his office to tackle gun violence. Carney says the president will engage the American people and lawmakers on this issue in the coming weeks, as well as meet with law enforcement officials and mental health professionals.

Carney did not offer any specific policy proposals or timeline for tackling gun violence.

Your Thoughts Can Determine How Well You Do In Real Estate

?

?

?

Your thoughts can determine how well you do in real estate. I have seen so many agents in the past few years with the mindset that the economy is so slow that the market is too bad to sell homes. When you focus on the negatives and what is lacking in your business, you miss the opportunities that are around you and constrict the flow of energy that you could put in to your business if you had a better outlook.

Some of the worst thoughts you can have are: "I can't succeed in today's market.", "I don't have enough clients.", "There isn't enough business to go around."... Have you ever thought like this? When you do, you tend to have more fear, stress, anxiety and worry. Dwelling on these things will prevent you from attracting more buyers and sellers. Your thoughts influence your daily reality. The more you focus on the things you DON'T want, the more of that you tend to get!?

?

?

Stop focusing your thoughts on outward circumstances like the economy, the market, and so on. Instead be proactive; don't focus on what the economy or the market is doing. Don't look to external conditions to determine your state of mind. You determine your own state of mind by your thoughts, emotions, and your actions. You create the life you want this way. (or the life you DON'T want)

?

To switch to a better mindset is not easy. It takes practice! First you must shift your focus from negative to positive. Successful people tend to embrace change because it represents an opportunity for growth and expansion. They also determine what they want and assume they'll get it.?

?

?

Don't let external conditions determine your mindset. Maintain a better mindset and adopt the beliefs of other successful people. When times seem tough, it is especially important to stay away from a negative mindset. Instead, go within and look for the opportunities for new ways to market yourself from a positive mindset. You'll be amazed at the difference small changes can make!

Here is to a successful 2013 for everyone!

S.Africa stocks book record close for third day

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African stocks booked a record closes on Wednesday, extending their run into a third day, as hopes of further U.S. stimulus boosted riskier assets worldwide.

Mining shares topped the gainers' list on the benchmark JSE Top-40 index as metal prices cruised higher with the price of copper at its strongest level in two months.

The stock market has hit a string record highs this year, largely unmoved by a global economic slowdown, U.S. fiscal problems, wildcat strikes at home and the euro zone debt crisis.

"What alternatives do you have to generate returns? We are in a low interest rate environment, cash is cheap and doesn't earn you anything in the bank so everyone is chasing the same asset for decent returns," Nilan Morar, a dealer at Global Trader.

"If you get a stock market that delivers 20 percent or even 15 percent return that's three or five times what you're getting in money markets and other asset classes."

The benchmark JSE Top-40 index rose 0.51 percent to a record closing high of 34,415.32, pulling back from a record 34,460.45 level set during the session.

The broader All-share index added 0.59 percent to its highest closing level of 38,763.64. It earlier reached a lifetime high of 38,789.43.

Investors are on course to reap about 20 percent return on domestic equities but a weaker rand currency, which has lost about 7 percent of its value so far this year, has eaten into returns for foreign investors.

Helped by higher metal prices, global miner Anglo American added 3.2 percent to 264.50 rand, Anglo American Platinum climbed 3.8 percent to 434.05 and African Rainbow Minerals rose 2.1 percent to 190.20 rand.

On the downside, PPC Ltd slipped 0.73 percent to 32.61 rand after the cement maker said it would pay $69 million for a controlling stake in Rwanda's only cement maker Cimerwa.

Employment placement agency Adcorp Holdings lost 0.6 percent to 29.77 rand after saying it would pay $63 million for a Melbourne-based IT jobs recruiter Paxus.

A total of 212 million shares changed hands, according the preliminary exchange data, with gainers outnumbering decliners 194 to 91 while 71 stocks were unchanged.

Gas tumbles almost 10 cents a gallon in 3 weeks

1 hr.

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the United States fell nearly a dime over the past three weeks, following a drop in crude oil prices and as refineries increased output, according to a widely followed survey released on Sunday.

Gasoline prices averaged $3.3766 per gallon on Dec. 7, down 9.62 cents from Nov. 16, according to Trilby Lundberg, editor of the Lundberg Survey.

This marks the ninth week of straight declines, totaling 46.06 cents per gallon since prices hit $3.84 on Oct. 5.

"Softer crude oil prices were the essential enabler," Lundberg said. "Refinery glitches were reduced and resolved one after the other, enhancing supply," she said, adding that seasonally weak demand also contributed.

Hurricane Sandy also had an effect on demand, she said.?

Business-Ethics Stories Prominent In Global Coverage

Dec 10th, 2012 ? Posted in: News

British employees say they are feeling pressure to cut ethical corners during recession; Wall Street Journal looks at ethics of granting pay raises to execs of companies headed for bankruptcy; many U.K. investors protest that ?ethical? investment funds often are ethical in name only

LONDON and NEW YORK

Developments at the intersection of business and morality were the subject of several headlines last week. Among them:

  • The recession is apparently prompting U.K. employees to take ethical shortcuts, reports the London-based Guardian. A report from the Institute of Business Ethics says 84 percent of British employees indicate that they work honestly ?always or frequently,? but 9 percent say they have been pressured to compromise their ethical standards. Eighteen percent say there is an ?unethical culture? prevalent within their organization. A fifth of British employees say they have witnessed unethical acts, but of them only half say they reported it, notes the Guardian.
  • Relationships between management and workers at the troubled Hostess Brands, Inc., began to sour months ago after workers learned executives received pay raises shortly before seeking bankruptcy protection, reports the Wall Street Journal. The Journal reports that such practices are common and often stir emotions, but are not entirely clear-cut in terms of ethics. On one hand, ?financially ailing companies often pay bonuses and other compensation to executives, directors, and private-equity owners in the months before filing for bankruptcy protection. Federal law restricts ?retention? bonuses paid to such ?insiders? after a bankruptcy case is filed but not before,? notes the Journal. ?Companies often say they are using their best business judgment when paying bonuses to executives who are working overtime to keep operations afloat. A firm?s fate often isn?t known when bonuses are paid, and companies argue they must motivate some executives to stay lest they suffer exoduses that further destabilize troubled situations.?
  • Angry investors are dumping some ?ethical? funds after concluding that not all funds so labeled are really that good, according to a report from Investors Chronicle, a publication of the Financial Times group. The Chronicle writes: ?Independent financial advisers claim the ethical investment market, which has almost trebled in size over the last decade, is clogged with a growing number of ?disillusioned? investors who have bought the funds while under the impression they are more ethical than they are in reality.? Morley reports that a recent study by FairPensions, a charity that promotes responsible investment by pension funds, claimed that almost half of ethical funds fail to fully disclose their investments.

Columbia basketball coach resigns

COLUMBIA STATION ? The Columbia Board of Education on Friday accepted the resignation of former head boys basketball Coach Matt Sheets, who was on paid administrative leave pending a criminal investigation into allegations he was providing beer and marijuana to a 19-year-old former student at the school.

Sheets, who was also a social studies teacher at the high school, was not at the board meeting, according to Superintendent Graig Bansek.

?I think he made the best decision for himself,? Bansek said of Sheets.

Had the allegations been proven, Bansek said, ?we would have gone forward with termination.?

?People in education are held to a higher standard, and we believe as a district they should adhere to it,? Bansek said.

Sheets alerted the district of his intension to resign his teaching and coaching positions in a letter earlier in the week, Bansek said.

?He resigned and said thanks ? he enjoyed his time at Columbia,? Bansek said.

Bansek said Larry Babics, the former girls basketball coach, has replaced Sheets as boys coach and Ken Marlette took over as girls coach.

Sheets, who joined the district three years ago, fell under suspicion after the former student attempted suicide Oct. 14, and her mother looked at her cell phone and Facebook account while trying to figure out what led her daughter to harm herself.

In an affidavit for a search warrant for cell phones owned by the teenager and Sheets, Lorain County Drug Task Force Detective Jim Larkin wrote that the mother discovered text messages on her daughter?s phone that indicated she and Sheets were ?hooking up? and that he was giving her marijuana and beer.

The mother also allegedly learned that Sheets was corresponding with her daughter using the alias ?Jerry Parsons,? a name that showed up both in her phone and on her Facebook account.

Sheets? number was listed under the Parsons pseudonym in the teenager?s cell phone, which her mother learned belonged to him by searching for the number using an online search engine, according to the affidavit. In Facebook messages exchanged by the couple, the teenager wrote to Sheets that she would send him pictures or whatever he wanted if he would give her beer and marijuana, Larkin wrote.

She also asked if he wanted to see her naked or in a bra and panties and appears to have forwarded him pictures, according to the affidavit.

In one exchange setting up an Oct. 12 date at a local bar, the teenager asked Sheets to bring marijuana with him, Larkin wrote.

Sheets allegedly responded that ?you would have to be real nice? and ?some (expletive) like that would have to be a real special person, super nice.?

When Larkin confronted Sheets on Oct. 19, the teacher said he met the teenager for the date at a bar and that they engaged in oral sex.

Larkin wrote that while Sheets admitted to giving the teenager beer, he denied giving her marijuana. He also acknowledged that he received nude photos from her.

The day after the date, the teenager told Sheets that she had a good time the night before and would see him the next week, according to the affidavit.

?(The teenager) says in the message that she will save the beer for tomorrow night, indicating that ?Jerry Parsons? aka Matt Sheets did give her the beer,? Larkin wrote.

The girl?s mother found a case of beer in her room.

Bansek said Sheets never had the teenager as a student in any of his classes and there?s no indication that they had a relationship while she attended school in Columbia. She graduated from another school district, he said.

Sheets did not return phone calls Friday. Bansek said a substitute who is certified to teach social studies will likely handle Sheets? classroom assignments.

Sheets is the second Columbia teacher to resign in 2012. In May, the school board accepted the resignation of fifth-grade science teacher Michelle Kazmierczak after she was charged with disseminating material harmful to juveniles.

She is accused of sending topless photos of herself to an eighth-grader who was dating her daughter at the time. The boy?s father, Tyrone Price, is accused of blackmailing her to keep the photos secret from her husband and police.

Kazmierczak contacted Lorain County sheriff?s deputies in an effort to put a stop to the blackmail and is cooperating with the investigation into Price, who is in a diversion program for stealing from the Amherst Youth Football Association.

Georgia's gift picks: 2012 holiday guide

Georgia's gift picks: 2012 holiday guide

This season everyone here at iMore has been asked to share some of their favorite gift ideas. Now, much as I love all my Apple products, and I'll certainly be picking some below, I also less than three a lot of other nerdy, geeky, stuff, so I have a range of picks for you, as always. Whether they're for friends and family, that special someone, or a gift for yourself, I hope you enjoy!

Field Runners 2

My absolute favorite game of the year, Field Runners 2 cost me hours and hours of time I didn't really have, but it's just so much fun it was a price I gladly paid. It's tower defense done right, for the second time. Give it to the gamer in your life.

iPhone 5

The iPhone is my world. Everything I do, from work to family to fun is done through my iPhone. While I enjoy the iPad for what it is, the one gadget I couldn't live without is the iPhone. If your special someone doesn't have an iPhone yet, it's probably the best commercial gift you could give them.

Olloclip 3-in-one lens system

One of the great features of the iPhone is its camera. And it's a feature that just about every iPhone owner users regularly. The Olloclip 3-in-one lens system will make that already awesome camera even more versatile. It includes external macro, wide-angle, and fish-eye lenses that slide over the iPhone's lens. Not only does it work great, but it's also small enough to fit in a pocket, purse, or bag. The quality combined with portability makes the Olloclip a very useful accessory that nearly every iPhone user will enjoy.

The Olloclip is available for the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5 in red, black, and white.

PadPivot

Unlike notebooks, the iPad is a laptop that doesn't quite sit comfortably in your lap. And the iPad 3 and iPad 4, especially, are heavy enough that it would be nice if there was a way to prop them up without having to hold them up. Well, that's exactly what the PadPivot does. The stand can work on a desk, but it can also hug your thigh and keep your iPad perfectly positioned. If your special someone loves their iPad, and loves using it on the couch, they'll love the PadPivot.

Jellyfish Art

Jellyfish Art is real, and it's spectacular. You get a tank. You add jellyfish. You control the LED lights via remote. And then you sit back and marvel in it all. You can start small, with a desktop tank and a single fish, and you can grow from there. It's nerdy. It's techy. It's biological. And it's different.

SuperTooth DISCO Bluetooth Speaker

The SuperTooth DISCO isn't a Bluetooth speaker I can sneak into my jacket pocket, but it's absolutely what I want when I'm driving around in my jeep, or at home and just want massive music from my tiny iPhone or iPad. The SuperTooth DISCO is both big and beautiful. There's even a SuperTooth DISCO 2 if you'd rather gift something smaller and more vertical.

  • $149 - SuperTooth DISCO - Buy now

  • $99.99 - SuperTooth DISCO 2 - Buy now

Your gift picks?

So that's what I'm recommending this year, but fair is fair -- now you have to tell me your gift picks! Hey, I want present ideas too! What apps, accessories, media, food, and fun stuff comprise your favorite gifts this year?

Israel's President tweets the pope a welcome

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israeli President Shimon Peres welcomed Pope Benedict XVI, both octogenarians, to social media with a personal tweet on Tuesday.

Peres, 89, tweeted on Tuesday, "Your holiness, welcome to Twitter. Our relations with the Vatican are at their best and can form a basis to further peace everywhere."

Relations have taken a turn for the worse in recent days.

The Vatican last week warmly welcomed the U.N. General Assembly vote recognizing the state of Palestine ? a move Israel hotly opposed and responded to by announcing plans for new settlement construction in the West Bank.

The Vatican on Tuesday led its daily newspaper L'Osservatore Romano with a highly critical news article about the planned construction.

The 85-year-old Pope isn't planning on following anyone and won't be tweeting until December 12. He joined Twitter on Monday and gained 250,000 followers within hours. He plans tweets in eight languages.

Peres, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has embraced social media. He visited Facebook's headquarters where creator Mark Zuckerberg helped him launch his official Facebook page in English.

In collaboration with a well-known Israeli announcer, his office released a music video, asking people to be his Facebook friend.

Brazil-Canada 3.0 Conference to Address Brazil's Digital Economy ...

By CDMN on Dec 3, 2012 / Categories: CDMN News, Government, Press Releases

Waterloo Region, ON ? December 3, 2012 ? When the first Brazil-Canada 3.0 Conference opens today in the Brazilian northeastern city of Jo?o Pessoa, it will be the culmination of a dream shared by two world leaders from two continents. In August 2011, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, pledged their commitment to increased collaboration and enhanced business opportunities between their two countries. Now, inspired by the format of the CDMN Canada 3.0 digital media forum which Brazilian representatives attended last spring, Brazil-Canada 3.0 is under way today and tomorrow in Jo?o Pessoa, Para?ba, Brazil to move that commitment forward.

?Deepening?our?trade, investment and educational ties with Brazil is a key part of Canada?s Economic Action Plan to create jobs, growth and prosperity in every region of our country,? said Ed Fast, Canada?s Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway. ?That is why we are delighted to see that following the Brazilian delegation to the CDMN Canada 3.0 digital media forum in Stratford, Ontario last spring, Canadian thought leaders are now invited to participate in an equivalent forum in South America. We look forward to continuing to work with our Brazilian partners to build a mutually beneficial?relationship?that generates benefits for people in both countries.?

The Brazil-Canada 3.0 Conference will bring together representatives of government, academia and the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector to discuss the challenges and opportunities for the digital economy in Brazil. Collaboration between the two countries was undertaken as part of joint initiatives under the bilateral Science, Technology and Innovation Agreement adopted in 2011.

?It is the ultimate compliment that the Brazil conference was inspired by the CDMN Canada 3.0 event to advance digital media in Brazil,? said Kevin Tuer, Managing Director of the CDMN. ?Going forward, we would like to explore how the Canada 3.0 conference model could be used in a similar fashion around the world to enhance the global digital media economy.?

Numerous presenters from across Canada are included in the Brazil-Canada 3.0 program. Tom Jenkins, Chair of the CDMN Advisory Board, who played a vital role in launching the Canadian forum, will address cooperation between the two countries in digital media.

?This is a phenomenal opportunity for the leaders of government, the ICT industry, and representatives of culture and the arts in Brazil to consider opportunities for digital media expansion in Brazil, and for Canada and Brazil to further collaborate on joint initiatives,? said Jenkins. ?It is indeed exciting to see the forum take root in another part of the world, and we wish Brazil much success as a result of this conference.?

The event includes conference streams on connectivity/internet governance; digital content; development of talent; and digital entrepreneurship. It also includes a startup company pitchoff competition, and the reward for the top startup will be a week of coaching at CDMN?s headquarters location at The Communitech Hub in Waterloo Region.

?Events like these are of great importance, as they offer opportunities to address, in a bilateral fashion, the vision, fully endorsed by Brazil, that ICTs can be a powerful tool for development. Likewise, being held in the northeastern region of our vast country, it may help balance the country?s digital inclusion scenery, traditionally more notable in the southeastern states,? notes Franklin Silva Netto, General-Coordinator of the Conference.

Organizers of the Brazilian Conference (Federal Government, State Government, Academia, Private Sector) have identified gaps in Brazil?s digital economy, with disparities in access to the Internet, with some areas of the country having higher access rates, and rural populations having less access to the Internet than urban dwellers. Canadians have addressed similar issues at previous Canada 3.0 forums and are striving ? through the CDMN Canada 3.0 digital media conference ? to enable all Canadians to do anything on-line by the target timing of 2017, Canada?s 150th birthday. The 5th Canadian forum, slated for May 14 & 15, 2013 will be held for the first time in downtown Toronto.? Registration is now open and further details are available at: www.cdmn.ca/canada30.

a meeting of meanings | Write Light

paper-dolls

No matter how trivial the medium and homely the message,?writing presents continual and abundant opportunities to convey joy and excitement or comfort and compassion. Apply the math to those opportunities, let a smile be your punctuation, and in a single day feel the world hum with a more hopeful, peaceful, whimsical vibration?.

?

I?m revising my 2007 writers? guide?and changing the world? beginning with my principal readership: entrepreneurs, managers, executives, educators, and other?people who aren?t professional writers but whose work requires writing, public speaking, or both. They do (at a guess) three-fourths of the writing that shows up on the Internet, in letters and reports, in certain periodicals, in government documents, and in other settings ? though many of them would rather be doing almost anything else. They don?t like to write, they tell me, adding that they don?t write well and writing takes them away from the work they were trained for, which might be medicine, architecture, R & D, client consultation, or sales calls.

For the last forty years I?ve been working with nonwriters who have to write. In my experience, about a third believe that they write well? or at least well enough. They do a fair job of arranging words on pages, I?ll grant, though I?ve yet to find an individual among these architects and educators and executives who consistently communicates well in writing.

This is bad news. It means that there are millions of writers who believe that their work is being read and understood, and millions of readers who think that they?re getting the information they need, and they?re all mistaken, and it?s making them cranky.

An act of love?

If you write much at all, you might have found that writing to communicate with anyone ? from your mom to your legislative constituents ? originates as an act of love and courage:?love for the values and goals that move you to write? ?love for your readers, perhaps??and courage to reveal?feelings and ideals to a reading audience of a single relative or ten million strangers.

Writers have been heard to say that they feel naked in print much as performers do onstage; but writers can and often do use sarcasm, untruthfulness, hyperbole, or obscure vocabulary as a barrier or a disguise. Clever writers develop their signature strategies for commanding and abusing a sort of transient power long enough to impress, perhaps ultimately to control, a well-targeted audience. ?Multiply one writer?s power by the huge number of documents ? electronic and otherwise ? produced daily on the planet, and you might glimpse how cynicism creeps so slyly into our unconscious attitudes.

nightshirt-red-top

For sale on eBay? free shipping? ends Sunday night, Dec. 3

View writing as essentially a long-cherished and -protected form of human interaction, however, and sarcasm comes across not as clever but as ugly? a huge verbal sneer, or worse. So let?s turn it around.

No matter how trivial the medium and homely the message, writing presents continual and abundant opportunities to convey joy and excitement or comfort and compassion. Apply the math to those opportunities, let a smile be your punctuation, and in a single day feel the world hum with a more hopeful, peaceful, whimsical vibration?.

This is no joke!

Research for the new edition of my writers? guide turned up a fascinating bit of data: Bad writing is more harmful than anybody understood. We thought that a particular business plan, editorial, annual report, or media release was merely annoying??too long, overladen with jargon and buzzwords, or harmlessly incomprehensible. Maybe the condescending tone distanced us. Maybe we ?saw? the arched eyebrow that meant the writer was having us on.

But did we understand that the writer, at the precise moment the forehead muscle contracted and the brow shot up, wasn?t feeling friendly toward us readers? that being in something of a snit caused her to rely more on power?than on?information and charm to win us over? and that it wasn?t working for any of us?

When a given sample of writing goes horribly wrong, it might not be purely out of the writer?s ignorance or inexperience. A five-minute whirlwind tour of websites turned up a dozen examples of writing styles that in my view are grossly misleading and disrespectful to readers. The meanings are skewed, clarity is absent, and communication opportunities are wasted. I chose to illustrate this point with examples of?corporate-speak and memes?because they appeared more than once, and because they?re easy to recognize.

Example 1: Corporatespeak?Buzz words and jargon

[Ho-ho-ho Healthcare] helps leading healthcare systems sustainably?improve operational and clinical performance through a combination of advisory services, technology and analytics?.

  • We have a passion for improving healthcare and a relentless focus on providing measurable results for our customers

  • We bring together advisory, technology and analytics in partnership with our customers

  • We integrate world-class strategy, proprietary methodologies, and advanced analytics to drive sustainable results.

?

This common and tedious business-writing style actually holds readers at arm?s length and fails, in my opinion, to forward the writer?s objectives. Bey0nd that,? there?s a sly animus that I perceive in much of the writing for public audiences and that might fuel the alleged polarities and feelings of isolation many find troubling? by way of the sample?s

  • patronizing tone and attitude (I?m smart and you?re not, so I can feed you this word salad while removing the flavor and the substance)
  • unfamiliar or esoteric vocabulary
  • overwriting, clumsy verbiage, ?stringing,? ?adjective-noun strings,? ?preposition sprawl?

(For more examples, search writing strings nouns modifiers. Also see
http://www.designsensory.com/pws/lesson5/)

Example 2: Memes Infiltrate Minds

I?m especially interested these days in the effect of ?memes? ? common perceptions or assumptions similar to ?sweeping generalizations.?

Examples I heard on the radio recently ?

  • We were raised in a toxic culture.
  • The parents of your generation didn?t understand the importance of children?s self-esteem.
  • Most people don?t notice or care about the homeless.

Bogus statistics and?unsubstantiated?trends become ?public knowledge? when introduced with phrases such as most people?or the pronoun we (antecedent unclear).?Similar results can be achieved with headlines that readers barely glance at. The 2007 headline ?Teen pregnancy numbers are skyrocketing!? appeared in the middle of the twelfth consecutive year of declining??teen-pregnancy rates.

Good writing?is writing that communicates as intended. It?s as much a matter of how it?s received as how it?s delivered. Whether your writing is ?correct? in terms of grammar and mechanics, whether it?s clever, whether it?s lyrical? these are secondary considerations, less important than clarity, respect, and honesty.

The story below has elements of truth and falsehood that are hard to separate. Data that apply to the larger group of 6-to-9-year-olds are manipulated such that they seem relevant to the 6-year-olds alone. The qualifier?sixty-eight percent of?[group] is paraphrased and positioned as?most of?[group]. What does ?most of?? actually mean? Ninety percent, in my judgment. What do you think?

Why 6-Year-Old Girls Want to Be Sexy (Study)

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/17/6-year-old-girls-sexy_n_1679088.html

Most girls as young as 6 are already beginning to think of themselves as sex objects, according to a new study of elementary school-age kids in the Midwest?.

Psychologists at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., used paper dolls to assess self-sexualization in 6- to 9-year-old girls. Sixty girls were shown two dolls, one dressed in tight and revealing ?sexy? clothes and the other wearing a trendy but covered-up, loose outfit.

Using a different set of dolls for each question, the researchers then asked each girl to choose the doll that: looked like herself, looked how she wanted to look, was the popular girl in school, she wanted to play with.

Across-the-board, girls chose the ?sexy? doll most often. The results were significant in two categories: 68 percent of the girls said the doll looked how she wanted to look, and 72 percent said she was more popular than the non-sexy doll.

Simply put, the data don?t support the sensational claim. Sixty-eight percent of the 6- to 9-year-olds studied is misleadingly reduced to most 6-year-old girls.?

Remember to aim

The careless writers we?re discussing, including the hypothetical brow-lifting writer cited above, probably didn?t mean to shoot themselves in the foot. ?They might have started out organized and sensible but became impatient and a little scared, so they rushed the process.

Don?t make the same mistake. In a matter of minutes you can put your writing project in perspective, giving it the proper weight and emphasis, and improving the odds that your message will be

  • read
  • understood
  • believable
  • persuasive

Maintain that perspective as your work progresses, checking now and then to ensure that your prose is

  • clear and concise
  • free of jargon, convoluted phrases, verbal showing-off
  • consistent with your brand

Wait! Stop! Back up!

As you were preparing to write, was your message well focused? Did you clearly understand?

  • what you wanted or needed to say [= your?meaning]?
  • how your message was relevant to your principal audience?[=audience?meaning]?
  • whether there were important secondary audiences (colleagues, critics, or competitors, for example) who might construe additional or conflicting meanings?

Ideally, once you?ve decided (a) that you have something worthwhile to say and (b) how and to whom you want to say it, you?ll take whatever time is necessary to determine (c) what it means. Say you?re an elementary-school principal and your message deals with

(a) next Wednesday?s early school closing ? ten minutes before the usual bell?

(b) conveyed in writing to students, parents, teachers, and bus drivers.

What does it mean?

(c-1) To you, it?s of minor administrative importance, but it could turn into a major administrative headache if not everyone is informed. The meaning from your perspective is entirely a matter of thorough distribution.

(c-2) You?ve identified four audiences and you understand that each audience will perceive at least one exclusive meaning. Within each audience there might be dozens of interpretations buzzing around. No audience will interpret your message uniformly, but there might be one or two prevalent understandings.

  • Students will be thrilled at the prospect of a shorter school day, you think, before it occurs to you that there are a number of kids for whom school is safer and more hospitable than home.
  • Some of the parents will be pleased about having more time with their kids; other parents will have to scramble for child-care arrangements; still others will shrug it off since their children are latchkey kids no matter when they get out of school.

Just a brief mental scan of students? and parents? attitudes toward school-closing time has reminded you that your announcement is far from trivial. Feelings of sympathy tug at you as you?re drafting the letter, and your tone becomes softer, less abrupt than before.

Once you are aware that an apparently simple message can be understood in an infinite number of ways (not all of which you can be expected to address), ?taking a reasonable number of alternative meanings into account will automatically become part of the writing process.

  • Good writing?is writing that communicates as intended. It?s as much a matter of how it?s received as how it?s delivered. Whether your writing is ?correct? in terms of grammar and mechanics, whether it?s clever, whether it?s lyrical? these are secondary considerations, less important than clarity, respect, and honesty.
  • If you mean to be understood, your writing will address the various levels of interest and understanding among your audiences.
  • There will be times when some or all of your message will be of scant interest to your audience. Be prepared to improve your communication or, starting from scratch, to rethink the relevance of your message. To do neither is a declaration of war.
  • If you have communicated clearly and respectfully, and your audience has understood and rejected your message, your writing isn?t at fault. Knowing about a particular audience?s negative interpretation of a message doesn?t obligate you to satisfy that audience?s discomfort.

Postscript

Be aware of the effect of nonverbal factors in written and public forums. There are dozens of potential sources of interference that can weaken your message. A few examples:

  • your fragrance
  • the paper you print on
  • the room temperature and availability of parking at your chosen venue
  • a preexisting relationship with your target audience
  • a hostile audience (which might require defusing the situation ahead of time)
