On Tuesday night, we?ve tripped across the numbers.

Per a source with knowledge of the contract, it?s a four-year, $12 million deal.? Montgomery receives no signing bonus, but he?ll be paid a $2.75 million roster bonus in 2012, along with a base salary of $700,000 and a workout bonus of $50,000.

In 2013, Montgomery?s base salary moves to $1.85 million.? He?ll also receive a roster bonus of $250,000 and a workout bonus of $50,000.

In 2014, the salary moves to $2.625 million, with another roster bonus of $250,000 and a workout bonus of $50,000.

In the final year of the deal, the salary becomes $3.125 million, with yet another roster bonus of $250,000 and a workout bonus of $50,000.

The cap numbers, if you care and if you?re still awake, are $3.5 million in 2012, $2.15 million in 2013, $2.925 million in 2014, and $3.425 million in 2015.

BenQ Joybee GP2

The BenQ Joybee GP2 ($599 direct) palmtop projector is the follow-up to the BenQ Joybee GP1, an Editors? Choice from 2009. The new model has added some nice touches, most notably higher brightness and resolution, a dock for an iPhone or iPod touch, an HDMI port, and an SD card slot. The rest of the market hasn?t stood still, though, with palmtop projectors becoming brighter and packing in features, and other iPhone-friendly projectors coming on the scene. Despite some image problems (with both data and video), the GP2 is an enjoyable product that I wouldn?t hesitate to recommend.

The GP2 is built around a DLP chip along with an LED light source meant to last for the life of the projector. The LEDs?rated at 20,000 hours (30,000 if you stick to eco mode)?help keep the total cost of ownership down, as you don?t have to factor in lamp replacement costs. Unlike standard projector lamps, they're also mercury free?a plus for the environment.

This projector is rated at 200 lumens, up from the GP1?s 100. Other palmtop projectors are also ramping up the brightness. Last July I reviewed the 200-lumen Acer K11 Projector ($379 list, 4 stars), and even brighter palmtop projectors are in our reviews queue. The GP2 is the third projector we?ve reviewed to incorporate an i-Thing dock; the other two are both Editors? Choice products, the Optoma Neo-i ($450 street, 4 stars) and Epson MegaPlex MG-850HD Projector ($799 direct,? 4 stars).

In terms of connections, the GP2 adds a little something for everybody. In addition to the iPhone dock, there?s a mini-HDMI port, a USB type A port that fits a thumb drive, and a USB mini-B port for connecting to a computer, and an SD memory-card slot. You can play music or videos, or view photos or documents, from a USB key, SD card, or from 1.3GB of internal memory.

Another port fits an included octopus cable, which connects either to a computer via a VGA connector or to an audio/video source with 3 RCA plugs. You can change sources?either with the controls on top of the projector or with the small remote, which is shaped like a headstone but fits comfortably in a hand; the source options are displayed in a carousel-type menu on the home screen.

As a palmtop projector, the GP2 is a bit on the large side, at 2.2 by 5.5 by 5.1 inches (HWD), though it did fit into my outstretched palm with fingers fully splayed. I weighted it on a postage scale at 1.2 pounds; 2.0 pounds when I included the power adaptor and power cord. An optional battery is expected to be available soon.

The projector has a black top and white sides, which curve outward toward the top. Three sides have speaker or ventilation grilles. One side has most of the ports; the side next to the lens holds the focus ring; and the back has an SD card slot. There?s no lens cover, so you?ll want to keep the projector in its soft carrying case when not in use.?

Image Quality

The Joybee GP2 displayed an image that filled our test screen (about 66 inches diagonal) from about 5 feet away. (As is typical of palmtops, the projector has a focus wheel but lacks a zoom control.)? Data images were bright enough to be usable in a darkened room, although a couple of images showing colored lines on a black background were marginal, as the lines did not display well. When I added a modest amount of ambient light to the room, the images looked washed out.

I ran the GP2 through our standard suite of DisplayMate tests. Color generally was good, with occasional, mild yellow or greenish tints in images. To its credit, the projector shows very little of the rainbow effect that often plagues DLP projectors, in which bright areas break up into little red-green-blue rainbows when you shift your gaze or an object moves on screen.

The projector did have one notable issue. According to BenQ, the GP2?s native resolution is WXGA (1,280 by 800 pixels). However, in several data images, I saw a pattern of spurious, faint lines or bands, reminiscent of a scaling artifact in which there?s a mismatch between the image source?s and the projector?s (specifically, its DLP chip?s) resolution. ?

We?ve seen similar issues in other WXGA DLP mini-projectors lately, and the chip maker, Texas Instruments, has yet to explain the nature of the artifacts. I?m not certain if the GP2?s issue is identical (BenQ couldn?t specify the exact model chip), but the lines?which appear mostly in images with finely patterned or hatched backgrounds?are distracting. In presentations, as opposed to our test images, they?d be most likely to affect readability of smaller type. The two smallest fonts in the GP2?s type test were blurred, which is worse than usual for the WXGA projectors I?ve tested.

I viewed video on the GP2 from two sources: a DVD player over an HDMI cable, and my iPhone. Although you could use it to view movies with, it wouldn?t be my preferred method, as it lost detail in both bright and dark areas, and flesh tones sometimes took on a reddish hue. At least you?ll have decent audio at a volume that should fill a small room, from the twin 2-watt speakers.

There?s a lot to like about the BenQ Joybee GP2. Its small size and portability make it useful for anything from making business presentations to small groups to showing photos, videos, or playing music at a party. Its built-in dock lets you play content from an iPhone or iPod touch. It offers connectivity via HDMI, VGA, composite video, or USB cable. The menu system is user friendly.

The GP2?s downside is that its image quality, for both data and video, was less than optimal. The Acer K11 offers better data image quality, while the larger Epson MegaPlex MG-850HD incorporates an i-Thing dock and has great data and video image quality. But the JoyBee GP2 is versatile, highly portable, and a lot of fun?well worth considering, particularly if you want to go small.

One of many lovely destinations found in Caribbean, Anguilla is yet another spectacular region. The stretch of land section of Anguilla is approximately Thirty-five square miles with the approximate populace connected with 13,500 locals. And so the overseas real estate market obtainable in Anguilla goes through these drawback to inland houses.

In addition to this, the particular global leases and local Anguilla?s vacation rentals for seaside dwellings inside Anguilla?s real-estate slip in between US$ 450,000 to US$ 600,000. However, the trend has actually been unreliable since these family homes are often traditional. Patent wars: Microsoft takes Motorola to EU

Microsoft on Wednesday filed a complaint with the European Commission against Google's Motorola Mobility in the latest salvo in an increasingly bitter patent war between technology giants.

Apple, which is embroiled in a multi-continent patent fight with South Korea's Samsung, lodged a similar complaint against Motorola Mobility with European competition regulators last week.

Both Microsoft and Apple accuse Motorola Mobility, which is being acquired by Google for $12.5 billion, of unfairly using its patent portfolio to try to block competing products.

At issue are what are known as standard essential patents. SEPs are patents that have been identified by technology companies as necessary to allow them to build compatible products.

Motorola Mobility is failing to live up to an industry pledge to license SEPs to rivals on fair, reasonable and nondiscriminatory terms, according to Microsoft and Apple.

"Motorola is attempting to block sales of Windows PCs, our Xbox game console and other products," Microsoft deputy general counsel Dave Heiner said, explaining the software giant's decision to file a complaint with the EC.

"Motorola is demanding that Microsoft take its products off the market, or else remove their standards-based ability to play video and connect wirelessly," Heiner said in a blog post.

"(Motorola) is on a path to use standard essential patents to kill video on the Web, and Google as its new owner doesn't seem to be willing to change course," he said.

A Google spokeswoman dismissed Microsoft's complaint as "another example of their attempts to use the regulatory process to attack competitors.

"It's particularly ironic given their track record in this area and collaboration with patent trolls," the spokeswoman said.

US and European regulators gave the green light last week to Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility.

Google, whose Android software is used by smartphone and tablet computer makers, acquired 17,000 patents with the purchase of the Illinois-based maker of mobile phones, tablet computers and television set-top boxes.

Announcing the acquisition in August, Google chief executive Larry Page said it will "enable us to better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft, Apple and other companies."

The US Justice Department's antitrust division, in approving the Google-Motorola Mobility deal, said Google, Apple and Microsoft had made commitments concerning their SEP licensing policies.

"The division's concerns about the potential anticompetitive use of SEPs was lessened by the clear commitments by Apple and Microsoft to license SEPs on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms," it said.

Google's commitments, however, "were more ambiguous and do not provide the same direct confirmation of its SEP licensing policies," the department said.

Heiner said Motorola Mobility "has refused to make its patents available at anything remotely close to a reasonable price."

"For a $1,000 laptop, Motorola is demanding that Microsoft pay a royalty of $22.50 for its 50 patents on the video standard," he said, while a group of 29 companies was making 2,300 other patents available for just two cents.

"If every firm priced its standard essential patents like Motorola, the cost of the patents would be greater than all the other costs combined in making PCs, tablets, smartphones and other devices," Heiner said.

Microsoft was not using SEPs in an attempt to block smartphones or tablets running Android, Heiner said, and he appealed to Google to change course.

"For a company so publicly committed to protecting the Internet, one might expect them to join the growing consensus against using standard essential patents to block products," he said.

Patent analyst Florian Mueller said on his FOSS Patents blog he expected the European Commission to "make a determination on the launch of full-blown investigations within a few months."

Mueller added that "if every owner of standard-essential patents behaved like Motorola, this industry would be in chaos, and grind to a halt.

"I don't dispute any company's right to defend its intellectual property vigorously, but when standard essential patents are involved, there must be clear limits."

Oregon releases draft of NCAA review, denies violations

EUGENE, Ore. -- The NCAA is alleging Oregon violated the organization's regulations in the way it used recruiting services over the past four years.

The accusations were contained in two draft documents, labeled "Proposed Findings of Violations," obtained Friday in a public records request by several media outlets. While the documents use language that indicates the NCAA and the university agree to certain points, an athletic department spokesman says Oregon does not acknowledge any of the violations.

The NCAA has been looking into Oregon's recruiting practices since questions arose over a 2010 payment of $25,000 to Willie Lyles and his Houston-based recruiting service. Lyles had a relationship with a player from Texas who committed to Oregon.

Information that the university later produced that it said was from Lyles was largely outdated.

The draft documents released Friday, which are heavily redacted, suggests Oregon's use of three scouting services "did not conform" with NCAA rules, and the Ducks exceeded the number of coaches allowed to recruit.

The documents state that the scope and nature of the violations "demonstrate that the athletics department failed to adequately monitor the football program's use of recruiting or scouting services."

Oregon has not received a formal notice of allegations from the NCAA. The documents released Friday do not include any possible penalties.

In a letter to boosters on Friday, Oregon Athletic Director Rob Mullens reiterated his commitment to cooperating with the NCAA.

"While we have no specific timetable on the inquiry, we remain in close communication with the NCAA as the process advances cooperatively through each stage. Currently, pursuant to the NCAA's process, we are in constructive discussions with the NCAA on the draft of their proposed findings," he said in the letter.

Mullens also said the school continues to work with outside counsel on an independent assessment of the program.

The NCAA will not comment on ongoing investigations.

A unique on-off switch for hormone production

Thursday, February 23, 2012

After we sense a threat, our brain center responsible for responding goes into gear, setting off a chain of biochemical reactions leading to the release of cortisol from the adrenal glands.

Dr. Gil Levkowitz and his team in the Molecular Cell Biology Department have now revealed a new kind of ON-OFF switch in the brain for regulating the production of a main biochemical signal from the brain that stimulates cortisol release in the body. This finding, which was recently published in Neuron, may be relevant to research into a number of stress-related neurological disorders.

This signal is corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH). CRH is manufactured and stored in special neurons in the hypothalamus. Within this small brain region the danger is sensed, the information processed and the orders to go into stress-response mode are sent out. As soon as the CRH-containing neurons have depleted their supply of the hormone, they are already receiving the directive to produce more.

The research ? on zebrafish ? was performed in Levkowitz's lab and spearheaded by Dr. Liat Amir- Zilberstein together with Drs. Janna Blechman, Adriana Reuveny and Natalia Borodovsky, and Maayan Tahor. The team found that a protein called Otp is involved in several stages of CRH production. As well as directly activating the genes encoding CRH, it also regulates the production of two different receptors on the neurons' surface for receiving and relaying CRH production signals ? in effect, ON and OFF switches.

The team found that both receptors are encoded in a single gene. To get two receptors for the price of one, Otp regulates a gene-editing process known as alternative splicing, in which some of the elements in the sequence encoded in a gene can be "cut and pasted" to make slightly different "sentences." In this case, it generates two variants of a receptor called PAC1: The short version produces the ON receptor; the long version, containing an extra sequence, encodes the OFF receptor. The researchers found that as the threat passed and the supply of CRH was replenished, the ratio between the two types of PAC1 receptor on the neurons' surface gradually changed from more ON to mostly OFF. In collaboration with Drs Laure Bally-Cuif and William Norton of the Institute of Neurobiology Alfred Fessard at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in France, the researchers showed that blocking the production of the long receptor variant causes an anxiety like behavior in zebrafish.

Together with Drs. Alon Chen and Yehezkel Sztainberg of the Neurobiology Department, Levkowitz's team found the same alternatively-spliced switch in mice. This conservation of the mechanism through the evolution of fish and mice implies that a similar means of turning CRH production on and off exists in the human brain.

Faulty switching mechanisms may play a role in a number of stress-related disorders. The action of the PAC1 receptor has recently been implicated in post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as in schizophrenia and depression. Malfunctions in alternative splicing have also been associated with epilepsy, mental retardation, bipolar disorder and autism.

Russians rally for Putin ? and 2 days off work

Mikhail Voskresensky / Reuters

Thousands of people attended a march backing Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Russia, on Thursday. Russians will go to the polls on March 4.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

MOSCOW -- Thousands of people marched in Moscow under Russian flags, balloons and banners on Thursday to back Vladimir Putin's bid to return to the presidency and counter opposition protests that have challenged his authority.

Putin?is running for a third term as president in an election on March 4. The 59-year-old is seen as certain to win, but is facing a strong challenge to his authority from a protest movement that has drawn large crowds to its rallies in Moscow.

The Associated Press reported that most of?Thursday's participants appeared to be workers paid by or dependent on the state, including teachers, municipal workers and employees of state companies.

$67 payment offered
Some people at the rally?told reporters?they were promised two days off in return for attending. Many?were reluctant to explain why they came, The AP reported.

"I came here with friends. They said they would pay each of us 2,000 roubles ($67)," said a 21-year-old man who gave his name only as Alexander. He and his friends were brought into Moscow by bus from just outside the city.

Putin's campaign team, which portrays him as a strong leader and guarantor of stability, has failed to quell reports that many of the people at pro-Putin rallies are paid or coerced into attending by employers and trade unions.

Motorists protest against Putin in Moscow's streets

Wearing warm hats, scarves and coats on a chilly national holiday, the participants started marching along the banks of the Moscow River behind a long blue banner declaring: "Our vote for Putin."

The atmosphere was festive on Defender of the Fatherland Day, a holiday which honors the armed forces.

The AFP news service estimated that 30,000 people were attending the rally. However, the BBC cited Moscow police as putting the total at 130,000.

Police were out in force because the opposition communists and nationalists planned rallies in other parts of the capital.

A laid-back Yankee in trouble in Putin's court

The communists and nationalists also staged small rallies in several other cities across the vast country of more than 140 million people. There were no immediate reports of clashes.

If?Putin, a?former KGB officer, wins the election, he will extend his 12-year rule for another six years. Putin was president from 2000 until 2008, when he was barred by the constitution from running for a third successive term, but has remained dominant as prime minister.

The latest opinion poll this week showed he would win more than 50 percent of the votes on March 4, enough to avoid a second-round runoff. His rivals include nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky, communist Gennady Zyuganov and businessman Mikhail Prokhorov, who owns the New Jersey Nets.

Meet the NBA tycoon who wants to be Russia's president

Putin says many?people want him to return to the presidency; when he last held the office, Russians enjoyed an economic boom on the back of a surge in the price of oil, Russia's main export commodity.

After initially insulting the protesters who have taken part in opposition rallies sparked by allegations of fraud in a parliamentary election won by his party on Dec. 4,?Putin has allowed their main rallies to go ahead.

'Frozen fury': Thousands brave icy chill to protest in Moscow

But he has accused foreign governments of backing the opposition protesters and has met none of their main demands, including a rerun of December's election, the release of people the opposition call political prisoners and far-reaching political reforms.

The next opposition protest in Moscow is planned for Sunday.

If?Putin wins two more terms, he could stay in power until 2024. The opposition protesters say a growing number of Russians feel they have no say in the way Russia is run and that it is bad for any country to be led by one person for so long.

(AP) ? Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo has been suspended two games without pay by the NBA for throwing a ball at an official during a game.

Stu Jackson, the NBA's executive vice president for basketball operations, announced the suspension Monday, one day after Rondo received two technical fouls and was ejected late in the third quarter of Boston's 96-81 loss at the Detroit Pistons.

Rondo was upset that a foul wasn't called with about 3:00 left in the quarter and tossed the ball at referee Sean Wright. He followed that with a verbal barrage directed at Wright and was ejected from a game for the first time in his professional career.

"You're always disappointed when that happens," said Celtics coach Doc Rivers. "You should never put yourself in front of the team. But it's an emotional game. We can all agree that it was a pretty bad foul and a clear foul that wasn't called. At the time, we were getting our butts kicked and the frustration was high and it's a human game. I can guarantee you five seconds, 30 seconds after it happened, I guarantee you Rondo wished he could take it back."

Rondo will miss Monday night's game at Dallas and Wednesday's matchup with Oklahoma City.

Rivers didn't seem surprised that the suspension was for two games.

"They told us early to don't prepare for him playing tonight. When they said that, I felt it meant multiple, otherwise they would have said one game."

Along with that was the development of electronic mail and instant messages or chat services. One should understand that before the development of email and IM, the people communicated via snail mail which took at least one week before it got to the address it was being sent to. Difficult Georgia Move | Articles Beloved

One of the most difficult things in this world is adapting to a new situation. At a young age I experienced this relocating from Georgia to Los Angeles. The whole method of relocating was difficult for me when I was young because my father did not tell me we were relocating. I was in my teenage years at the time living with only one parent. My dad was a contractor for this company for many years in Georgia and got offered a better business opportunity in California.

I first began to take in that we were moving when my father started selling most of our furniture and he began to pack up the home. I was then told to start to pack my belongings I got kind of scared and not sure what was to come. Little did I know that this was going to become an interesting journey.

When the Georgia movers showed up I recalled them packing all of our stuff and wrapping up what was left of our furniture. When they got to my room they picked up my glass eagle that my mother gave to me, and I remember following them all the way to the moving van to make sure it was packed safely. I was so scared that somehow the piece might be injured or lost during the move, and during such a stressful time in my life, the last thing I wanted to worry about was losing my prized possessions. After all, I was already saying goodbye to a lot of my friends.

In my luck, my father had some experience in hiring the best moving company in Georgia he was able to get in touch with. My glass statue and all of our other items arrived safely to our new home in California.

Nothing during the move was broken! The movers did use quite a bit of paper, tape, and other soft things to get the job done, but it worked! Because of the moving company in Georgia, the least difficult part of getting started with my new life was the move! Making friends starting a whole new life was a whole new challenge.

Sometimes you get lucky when choosing a Georgia moving company. And this time I can definitely say that we did. Relocating your items over two thousand miles while keeping all our things safe must have been a challenge for the movers but they did it!

Moving to California may have become one of the most difficult things to happen to me at that point in my life. I am very glad it happened because I met many great people and started a really loving family.

Singapore Car Rental Companies | Dating Advice Singles

People rely on a car rental company when there are special occasions that call for a luxurious car, whenever they need a bigger and sturdier vehicle for long trips, and of course when they go abroad for a vacation or to work. Like in most global cities, in Singapore car rental businesses are very organized, well-regulated, and continuously growing.

With the sad prices of fuel and expensive costs of maintaining a car, more and more Singaporeans feel discouraged from purchasing a car and realize the practicality of just renting transportation every now and then, whenever there?s a need to rent one. Through the car rental business, people are spared from high fuel expenses, maintenance, and repair costs, and more importantly the frustration and stress from all the driving and the traffic.

Rental companies own a wide collection of vehicles ranging from vans to sedans to utility vehicles and to trucks. And while they could easily offer a ready vehicle for you, it?s still wise to book a reservation a week or two before the travel date to get rid of any troubles. This must be considered especially when the trip is set during peak seasons or on a holiday when most families in the city go out on a leisure trip in faraway places.

Car rentals come with different coverage of insurance, so choose one which you believe will give you the ultimate security. Also consider requests such as GPS, extra car seats, baby?s seat, etc. Make sure that you understand all the terms and conditions of the rent before giving your personal information and credit card or bank details.

Companies swap vehicles in cases of breakdowns without charge as long as it?s proven that the driver?s not at fault. Take note that breakdowns caused by neglect come with additional charges for repair and replacement of parts. All violations related to parking and traffic will also be shouldered by the client.

In dealing with car rental providers, it?s crucial that you understand everything that is stated in the contract. Carefully consider factors such as refueling charges, emergency assistance, insurance coverage, and cancellation policy. Before sticking to one rental company, make sure that you have gathered several proposals from various companies and weighed out their pros and cons.

Are You Thinking About Going Back To College?

If you are a Mom going back to school, you are facing a hard but rewarding road. And like any trip, a little planning up front can make the journey easier. Of all of the challenges surrounding going back to school, getting the money for classes can be the most daunting. College expenses have never been higher and finding financial aid can be crucial to your ultimate success.

Getting scholarships is not as hard as you might think. Maybe you weren?t a straight A student or a champion athlete, but not all scholarships are based on things like these.

Federal programs exist to provide student aid to a broad spectrum of the nation?s population. To find out how much you may qualify for, you simply fill out the online FAFSA application. FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid and is the one application required to be considered for nearly all of the Federal programs out there.

There are several sources of financial aid beyond the Federal government which can help fill the gap in your financial aid package. First, the school that you are attending has many programs and scholarships available. Which ones are you eligible for? You won?t know until you ask. Contact financial aid and see what they can go for you. Another source is your own community. Local civic and religious groups often have scholarship funds available that can help you make educational ends meet.

The best money for school is free money. Money that you don?t have to pay back. There are many programs out there that can provide grants and scholarships for you school expenses. There are also private lending institutions that can help you as well. By filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you can find out how much Federal grant money you qualify for. This money can be used for any expenses while you are in school and does not have to be paid back. Note that your award notice will list any student loan programs that you qualify for as well. It will be tempting to just take them up on the offer, but press on to the private sector first. Remember, free money is what you are looking for.

Thinning ice resulting from climate change in the Arctic is happening far faster than experts previously imagined - These changes mean Canada will need to advance its laws on shipping regulation, ocean governance and marine biodiversity protection

VANCOUVER -- Thinning ice resulting from climate change in the Arctic is happening far faster than experts previously imagined. With it come new global shipping routes and growing interest in natural resource development and regional tourism. These changes, says a leading expert in oceanic governance, are urging Canada to advance its laws on shipping regulation, ocean governance and marine biodiversity protection.

David VanderZwaag, Canada Research Chair in Ocean Law and Governance, says that, although Canada faces growing challenges in Arctic governance given increased regional activity and mounting interest in developing the region's oil, gas and mineral industries, it has the potential to lead the way by how it governs its oceans and adopts practices of sustainable development in the Far North.

"There is a huge doughnut hole in the central Arctic Ocean that's beyond all the countries' coastal jurisdiction," says VanderZwaag. "As every country has the right to a 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone, there's a big gap in the middle, which could potentially turn out to be problematic. It's an area, however, where Canada could demonstrate its leadership."

VanderZwaag's work is wide-reaching and addresses ocean law, research, governance and policyareas where Canada could prove to be an international leader. His research looks at how and where Canada can build on its strengths in oceanic governance. Such strengths include the Oceans Act of 1996a first-of-its-kind comprehensive international act that set out a roadmap for dealing with future challenges in international oceanic governance.

Another area of success Vanderzwaag is researching is Canada's solid foundation of strict environmental standards for shipping. He is currently working on a book that covers Canadian and Russian approaches to the law of the sea and Arctic Ocean governance.

VanderZwaag's work is already helping to strengthen Canada's law and policy net for protectingeven savingmarine species at risk. He recently co-authored a report for the Royal Society of Canada on how to better sustain Canada's marine biodiversity. He has also published extensively on the precautionary approach to decision-making, which can be a powerful risk-assessment tool for policy-makers in evaluating the environmental impact of development proposals.

Vanderzwaag has also published recommendations to improve the governance system for the international control of toxic chemicals.

The Canada Research Chairs Program is designed to attract and retain the best talent from Canada and around the world, helping Canadian universities achieve research excellence in health sciences, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities. Since the program was launched in 2000, chairholders have improved Canadians' depth of knowledge and quality of life, strengthened the country's international competitiveness, and helped train the next generation of highly skilled people. For Tier 1 chairholders, the award is worth $1.4 million and is allocated over seven years.

VanderZwaag will discuss his research and answer questions from the press as part of the Canada Press Breakfast on the theme of Arctic and Oceans, which is being held at AAAS in Vancouver. The breakfast will be held in Room 306 of the Vancouver Convention Centre at 8 a.m. on February 17, 2012, and will feature Canadian research experts across natural sciences and engineering, health, and social sciences and humanities.
