Report: Jonathan Rhys Meyers Hospitalized In London; Source Denies Alleged Suicide Attempt (omg!)

LONDON, England -- Former "Tudors" star Jonathan Rhys Meyers was reportedly hospitalized in London this week after an alleged suicide attempt, according to reports out of the UK.

The 33-year-old actor, who has spent time in rehab in the past for alcohol addiction, was reportedly found "slumped on the floor" when paramedics responded to an emergency call from the actor's home, the Sun reported.

Once paramedics arrived, Rhys Meyers reportedly "refused treatment at the scene for more than 30 minutes," at which point police were called, the paper claimed.

He was eventually taken to London hospital near his home on Tuesday night and discharged early Wednesday.

A rep for the actor had no comment on the incident, when contacted by several outlets, including People magazine. However, according to People, a source confirmed the hospitalization, but noted it was not a suicide attempt, as had been previously reported.

"He did relapse but he did not try to commit suicide," the source said, according to People. "He was taken to the hospital and then released."

Additionally, a spokesperson for Scotland Yard told the mag, "We can confirm we were called by the London Ambulance Service to an address in NW8 to report to a man refusing treatment. Police attended, and the man was taken by ambulance to a central London hospital. That was the end of our involvement."

Looking for answers, Casey Anthony's father bought gun (Reuters)

ORLANDO, Fla (Reuters) ? The father of accused child killer Casey Anthony sobbed on the witness stand on Wednesday as he testified that he bought a gun in August 2008 and planned to force his daughter's friends at gunpoint to tell him what happened to his then-missing granddaughter.

George Anthony, called back to the witness stand by the defense, also said he tried to commit suicide in January 2009, a month after 2-year-old Caylee's skeletal remains were found.

"It just felt like the right time to go and be with Caylee," he told jurors in the sixth week of the highly publicized first-degree murder trial in Orlando.

Prosecutors say Casey, 25, smothered her young daughter with duct tape on June 16, 2008 so she could "live the good life" free of the demands of motherhood. They say Casey stored the child's body in her car trunk, then dumped it in woods near her home.

When Casey's mother reported the child missing a month later, Casey claimed Caylee had been kidnapped by a nanny.

Prosecutor Jeff Ashton told Judge Belvin Perry that George's testimony rebutted the defense contention that George was somehow complicit in Caylee's disappearance.

"This man had no idea who killed Caylee Marie Anthony," Ashton said.

Defense attorney Jose Baez said at the start of the trial that Caylee accidentally drowned in the Anthony family's backyard pool. He said George found her body, but the death went unreported.

Baez also claimed that George had sexually abused Casey starting at age 8. George has denied any sexual abuse or involvement in Caylee's death.

As her father broke down on the stand, Casey continued to write in a legal pad and whispered to her lawyers.

NEVER USED GUN

George said he never used the gun he bought. At the time he purchased it, Casey was under house arrest after being charged with lying to detectives during their investigation into Caylee's disappearance.

Within hours of bringing the gun home, someone from the jail arrived to tell him the weapon violated the terms of Casey's house arrest and took the gun away, George said.

He said his intent was to force answers from Casey's friends and associates, whom he did not name.

"I wanted to get answers from people that I believed were involved with my granddaughter (being) missing," he said.

George testified he continued to believe Casey's account of a kidnapping even after Caylee's remains were found in woods near their home on December 11, 2008.

George said he checked into a motel in Daytona Beach on January 22, 2009 with prescription pills and beer. He found it hard to accept that Caylee was dead, he said.

He described calling some relatives one last time and writing a multiple-page suicide note for his wife, telling her, "how I didn't want to be in this world anymore".

George said he would have died if law enforcement hadn't found him and taken him to the hospital.

Ashton told Perry he intends to introduce George's suicide letter into evidence, but the judge said he hadn't yet decided whether to allow jurors to read it.

Baez tried to stop George's testimony about the gun and suicide letter from being heard by the jury. Perry acknowledged that the testimony and letter normally would not be allowed, but ruled that prosecutors could ask George about his state of mind because Baez had "opened the door."

Earlier on Wednesday, Baez brought up the suicide letter and asked George: "You expressed some guilt, did you not?"

Before George could answer, prosecutors objected and Baez withdrew the question.

Nicotine Addiction and How Psychological Aroma-Therapy Can Help You

There is a claim that the toughest part of quitting smoking is getting past the nicotine addiction. There are many nicotine gum and nicotine replacement patches on the market that claim to help in quitting smoking. But does it really make sense to break the addiction to a substance by finding another way to deliver that same substance back into your body?

We want to rid our system of nicotine, and cleanse its effects from our body. In order for this to happen we need to become completely free of nicotine. Nicotine is the cause of our cravings so the first step to beating smoking is to get free of it.

Nicotine is the reward of smoking. When we feed our addiction we feel a calmness that we think helps us to deal with stress. We have a nice and light feeling. So we need to find a good way to divert us away from this nicotine craving. You can occupy your mind by making a cup of tea, doing some exercise, even having a glass of water.

More than just an addiction to nicotine, smoking is a habit. There are places, situations and people who will trigger this habit, learn to avoid them and do something creative instead.

Habits can be as hard as addictions to break. The first step is to make a firm determination that you truly want to quit smoking. Remembering the ill effects of nicotine and those other poisons in cigarette smoke will help your determination, but it has to begin with you.

Once you have your honest determination, aroma-therapy is a tool to help you get rid of the smoking habit. Try these steps.

Find a pleasant smelling and relaxing aroma-therapy oil blend. Lavender or the rose blends are excellent. Patchouli is great for relieving stress. First put the oil near your cigarettes. Next put the oil near your lips, like you would if it was a cigarette, and inhale. Take a couple of deep breaths so you get the full effect of the oil?s aroma. You will keep smelling that wonderful aroma for quite some time.

What you are doing is tricking your brain into forgetting the nicotine. This act of inhaling the oil?s fragrance feels almost like smoking. Aroma-therapy is a substitute for smoking, and will allow you to escape nicotine. It is a form of psychological intervention. If you can resist the craving for even two minutes, it will pass and you will beat the habit.

You can also help yourself quit smoking by using programs specifically designed to help you on this journey. These are programs that use natural ways of helping you quit instead of adding more poisons to your body. Click here for one of the best stop smoking programs on the market. You won?t regret it.

I can speak from experience when it comes to quitting smoking as I smoked for well over half my life. However I quit smoking, and I did it the first time I tried. There is absolutely no reason why you can?t give up too. It?s time for you to take that major step right now. To help you quit, sign up for the email course on How You Can Stop Smoking which has already helped countless people quit their smoking habit.

10000 Steps to Excellent Health and fitness - Free Articles ...

Everybody wants to be as healthy as they can but not everybody has the time to do the required amount of exercise to get there. This is actually why some health experts are advocating the ten thousand step method. The strategy is that you take at least ten thousand steps each day (walking) which will help you get very healthy and cut down on the time that is required for exercise. Walking can be excellent physical exercise and very low impact. How often have you over heard a health care provider say ?just a single walk around the block helps your health??

Obviously, this will not easy to take ten thousand steps everyday. That?s a huge number of steps to take! The nice thing about it is that you are already probably taking ten thousand steps each day without knowing it. All you need to do is learn how to add in a couple or few thousand extra steps to achieve this goal. So how do you make it happen without feeling like you?re spending half of your morning walking around?

There are a number of totally obvious things you can apply to take more steps. One typical example of this is going up the the stairs instead of taking an elevator or escalator. When you decide to go to the store or the mall park further from the entrance. To further this strategy, you can also remain parked in a single spot and walk your shopping bags out to the car as you accumulate them-instead of carting them all over the shopping center as you run your errands. Choosing public transit is great because it includes a walk to and from a bus or train stop which is great for increasing your step count. The most obvious way to do it, of course, would be to just take a short walk each day.

Some less obvious ways to grow your step count are also available. Order your current shopping list in another way. Most people today will write out a grocery store list according to the aisles in the shops. Organize your list in categories such as dairy, meat, produce, snacks, etc. Simply shop along the list from here. You could possibly end up criss crossing the store more than once but it?s a wonderful way to raise your step count. Instead of putting your mailbox inside your front door or installing it in a wall of your house, put it out by the curb on a post. This may create a minumum of one or two dozen steps to your count when you check the mail everyday.

There are a lot of ways of build your current step count. As you grow to be used to walking 10,000 steps each day you?ll think of plenty of creative ways to get to that number. Thankfully, every step you take?whether it?s walking to the refrigerator or jogging on a treadmill, counts toward your end step count goal. Have fun with it!

Have Fun With Baby Shower Games

Baby showers are held either before or after the baby arrives. Usually, parents prefer to hold the shower weeks before the pregnancy due date so that they can focus on pampering their babies when it comes. People throw out baby celebrations to celebrate the new life that is about to come, to congratulate the mother and to offer the mother comfort and support. To brighten up a baby shower, you can have baby shower games. Most of the time during parties, people leave right away once eating time is finished or the program is finished. With baby shower games, you can make your guests stay and have excitement with them.

If your guests are not yet acquainted, you can use games for them to know each other. This is advisable especially to those who have lots of relatives. Games can help unite the two families ? the family of the mother and the family of the father. They are also a way of prolonging the party for everyone to have more time to chat with each other. They can be a great way to make the party funny, exciting and memorable. Here are some baby shower games you can use for your party.

The Super mom game is a game where the mothers in the party will compete. You will provide a cloth diaper, safety pins and a teddy bear or doll for this game. The mothers will be divided in two or more groups. The aim of the game is to put the cloth diaper to the teddy bear or doll using on hand of each group member. The winner will be selected by the expectant mother. The winner is the group who did the task fastest and the neatest job.

Another idea is called Little Feet. In this game, you will need lots of pairs of baby socks. It would be better if you can provide as many as you can and that they have different colors and patterns. The aim of the game is to let each contestant pair up the socks in 30 seconds. The person who was able to make the most correct matches in the given time will win a baby shower prize.

The activities above require physical involvement. If you want to have less physically active games you can have the Name that Nursery Rhyme game. The way that this works, is: the host will mention a nursery rhyme leaving out some words. The contestants will have to race in pressing a buzzer or raising a flag to have a chance to answer. They should sing the nursery rhyme with the missing words.

Guessing games can also be fun. You can provide a huge baby bottle with pacifiers or safety pins inside. The participants will have to guess how many pacifiers or safety pins are there in the bottle. The person who can get the right answer or the one who is closest with the actual number will win a prize.

Car bomber kills 35 at Afghan clinic

Car bomber kills 35 at Afghan clinic

AP/Balala

An injured Afghan man, a victim of a blast lies in a hospital bed in Kunduz city in the northern province of Kunduz, Afghanistan, Saturday, June 25.

A suicide car bomber blasted a small clinic Saturday in eastern Afghanistan, causing the building to collapse as mostly women and children lined up for vaccinations, maternity care and other services. At least 35 people were killed in one of the deadliest attacks against civilians this year.

Guards saw a sport utility vehicle charging toward the Akbarkhail Public Medical Center, a compound that provides health care for the mountainous area in the Azra district of Logar province. But before anyone could shoot the driver or blow out the tires, the SUV smashed through a wall and exploded, local officials said.

Wary of being blamed for civilian casualties, the Taliban denied it was behind the bombing. Violence has been on the rise since the Islamic movement launched its spring offensive and promised retaliation for the death of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

"This attack was not done by our fighters," Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

Survivors of the blast and others who heard the explosion frantically dug through the rubble with shovels and bare hands. At least 35 bodies were pulled from the debris and 53 other people were wounded, provincial public health director Dr. Mohammad Zaref Nayebkhail said.

The victims -- most women and children -- included patients, visitors, and medical staffers.

"They were offering important services for the people. We had very good services and lots of patients. There were only 10 beds but lots of other services in that center. It's why the casualties were so high," he said.

Nayebkhail said an Afghan army helicopter was dispatched to the area to deliver medical supplies and to ferry survivors to other hospitals. He said the clinic had recently been expanded to meet the health needs of the far-flung district's population.

The Taliban claims it does not target civilians, but the movement is fractured and Saturday's attacks shared characteristics of recent violence.

Saturday's attack was the deadliest since February, when three men shot to death 38 people at a Kabul Bank branch in Jalalabad. The Taliban claimed responsibility, saying the victims deserved their fates because some worked for the Western-backed Afghan government, which they perceive as illegitimate.

The Taliban also claimed responsibility for a bomb attack in February in the northern province of Kunduz which killed 31 people as they waited for government identification cards.

A recent U.N. report found that May was the deadliest month for civilians since it began keeping track in 2007, and it said insurgents were to blame for 82 percent of the 368 deaths recorded.

Late Friday, another blast -- this one caused by a bicycle rigged with explosives -- ripped through a bazaar in the Khanabad district of Kunduz province in northern Afghanistan, killing at least 10 people, including a police officer, and wounding 24, according to an Interior Ministry statement.

The bombings raised concerns about the readiness of Afghans to take over their own security as the U.S. and other NATO nations begin to withdraw forces. President Barack Obama's announced Wednesday that he plans to withdraw 10,000 U.S. troops from Afghanistan by the end of the year. NATO officials insist the Afghan government will be prepared for full sovereignty by 2014.

The French government reported, meanwhile, that a French soldier was killed after coming under fire from insurgents while on a reconnaissance mission east of Kabul.

The death brings to 47 the number of NATO service members killed in June, and to more than 200 those killed this year, slightly fewer than last year's six-month total.

As violence raged in the provinces, Kabul plunged deeper into a constitutional crisis.

Afghan lawmakers, upset over a controversial electoral investigation, passed a no-confidence resolution on Saturday against the nation's most senior judicial officials, calling for five of them to be fired two days after doing the same for the attorney general.

It was unclear if the decision would actually lead to action against the judicial officials. President Hamid Karzai was in neighboring Iran attending a security conference.

Both votes were taken to protest a special investigative tribunal that invalidated the victories of 62 lawmakers because of alleged improper voting procedures and fraud. The tribunal was requested by the attorney general, endorsed by the supreme court and approved by Karzai.

Some parliament members characterize its findings as an unconstitutional power grab by Karzai and his appointees.

Two-term parliament member Fawza Kofi, not among those named in the tribunal's report, supported the no-confidence votes.

"The tribunal didn't deal with any criminal issues, rather it just invalidated the votes of the people," she said.

She acknowledged the parliamentary vote was largely symbolic, since the body has no power to remove the judges or attorney general. Abdul Malik Kamawi, chief executive of the supreme court, said the votes were unconstitutional and would be ignored.

Deputy Attorney General Rahmatullah Nazery also dismissed the no-confidence votes as illegitimate, since some of the lawmakers had been discredited by the special tribunal. Nazery said his office will refer the tribunal's findings to the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan, which will have the final word on whether to replace the lawmakers.

Call to sack sex crime footballer | Zaykar Global Ventures

Charity Children 1st has called for Hearts player Craig Thomson to be sacked after he was put on the sex offenders register.

The 20-year-old has been convicted for indecent behaviour towards two girls aged 12 and 14 on the internet.

The club said they were keeping the player as there were mitigating circumstances which provided assurance his conduct would not be repeated.

Children 1st insisted Hearts need to look again at the issue.

The charity's policy manager Kate Higgins told BBC Radio 5 live: "We believe that Hearts football club needs to look again at this situation, not taking action to protect children from the risk of sexual harm is unacceptable.

"Allowing convicted sex offenders to continue working where they will have direct and indirect contact with children is wrong."

Thomson was placed on the sex offenders register earlier this month after pleading guilty to two charges of indecent behaviour.

He was also fined ?4,000 for his lewd, libidinous and indecent behaviour towards two girls, aged 12 and 14, over the internet.

Hearts said it would go through the "necessary internal procedures relating to the case".

On Friday the Scottish Premier League club said Thomson's "grave error of judgement" was due to "naivety and possible wrong outside influence".

The full-back resumed training at the club with immediate effect.

He issued an apology via the club website, saying that he is "fully aware that I have let everyone down".

Hearts posted two statements on the matter on their website. The first read: "The club views this matter very seriously and does not condone the behaviour of the player. Appropriate action to prevent any further development of unlawful activities has been taken.

"In reaching this decision, the club accepted that there are sufficient mitigating circumstances that provide significant assurance that the player's conduct, no matter how distasteful, was the result of a grave error of judgement due to naivety and possible wrong outside influence rather than anything more sinister and it will not be repeated."

Then, early on Friday evening, the club issued another statement which refers to "outside influences on players and the club".

Kids Are Additional Information and Get Much better Instruction ...

Home education is endorsed in many countries adding to its extensive history in homeschooling. There are laws in the US that were eventually passed making attendance in school a requirement which ultimately impacted how and where children were educated on a larger scale. Although, the last several decades have included many incidences that have influenced parents to begin to reconsider public school education.

There are of course many parents who are not satisfied with a lot of the aspects of a traditional education. It is really not surprising that parents want to have more control over what happens to their children. As well as what their children are learning. Following you will see many of the benefits of homeschooling your children.

The ratio of students to teachers is something most parents will consider before choosing a new school for their children. The number of teachers to students seems to indicate many things as a prime example, individual attention is diminished with higher ratios. Because public schools have become overcrowded, the attention a teacher can give to each child has suffered because there simply isn?t enough time in a day. A lot of students could benefit from some more individual attention. This situation is resolved with homeschooling. Individual plans can be developed for homeschooled children that involves the amount of attention they receive and this can be adjusted as the need arises. No matter what the subject, this attention can make a huge difference in a child?s overall success in learning. Character formation for example is one of the abstract lessons parents who educate their children can take more time on when teaching. This is a critical area that you won?t see a lot of time or focus devoted to in public and private schools. This situation in public schools is often compounded due to a lack of interaction with the parents or the single parent. Very fast paces is how many of us would describe our current life situations. Homeschooling can address many of these issues and help to build a child?s character in addition to providing a sound education.

When you take the time to homeschool your children you are helping them to develop stronger and more intense relationships within your family.

If you have multiple children, then of course the bonds forged between siblings will have a higher quality. Not to mention that the relationship between parents and children is also stronger when multiple children are involved. In today?s society on of the primary issues pertains to the lack of time parents spend with their children. There are a multitude of benefits associated with close knit families.

The entire family can benefit from homeschooling. But, not all families are in a position that will allow them to take on the task of homeschooling. For example, single parents without another supportive resource may not be able to accomplish this. There are of course concerns and burdens added to parents who want to homeschool their children. Home of course, is the optimal place for this to happen.

Children trust their parents and will naturally want to do well because they want to please their parents. In a homeschool classroom such as this, children will aspire to learn more.

Water level appears to be falling in flooded Minot (AP)

MINOT, N.D. ? The Souris (SUHR'-is) River appears to be starting a slow decline at Minot (MY'-naht), where efforts to hold off further flood damage are successful so far.

The river's level dropped in four straight hourly readings through midday Sunday, though by just a few hundredths of an inch. National Weather Service meteorologist Ken Simosko says the Souris either has peaked or is peaking.

But Simosko warns Minot won't be clear of danger until the water falls significantly later this week. More than 4,000 homes were damaged as the Souris streamed over levees the past two days.

Army Corps of Engineers spokeswoman Shannon Bauer says levees are being reinforced with plastic sheeting. She says crews built a ring dike Saturday to reinforce one leaky levee on the city's east side.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Clergymen Mike Johnson and Mike Pancoast have been too busy helping people chased from their homes by rising waters to give much thought to their own predicament.

The Evangelical Lutheran pastors are bunking with friends in Minot after being evacuated from the Souris River flood zone last week. But on Saturday they hopped into a car and headed for Velva, about 20 miles downstream, to assist others who were being forced to move.

"It's disheartening," Johnson said. "But I'm grateful that I have a place to go and I feel for people who are worse off than I am."

The river appeared to be leveling off early Sunday after swamping an estimated 4,000 homes. It was less than 7 feet above major flood stage and hadn't changed by more than fractions of an inch during the night. National Weather Service meteorologist Patrick Ayd said a crest could be declared later Sunday.

Johnson, associate pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, was uncertain about the fate of his own apartment building, although his belongings were safely in the hands of parishioners and friends in town. Fellow Lutherans from Stanley, an hour's drive west, took charge of his office equipment and files.

"They just showed up on Tuesday and carted stuff off for us," he said.

Similar stories of people helping each other, often without being asked and demanding nothing in return, were a heartwarming counterpoint to the destruction from unprecedented flooding along the Souris valley in north-central North Dakota. Brought together by word of mouth, church and civic networks, social media and random encounters, those with housing and supplies to spare gave willingly to those without.

So many opened their doors that while some 11,000 people were evacuated from neighborhoods nearest the river, only a few hundred used shelters at Minot State University and the City Auditorium.

"For the rest of the country, that is kind of mind-boggling. But ... that's how we are in North Dakota," Sen. John Hoeven said.

A Facebook page called "Minot ND Flood Help" drew volunteer offers to haul furniture, care for pets, clean laundry and even give therapeutic massages ? many from outside town.

Patrica Eide of Tioga, about 85 miles west, posted an offer to loan her 30-foot camper to a displaced family. It quickly drew a taker: a man with a wife and three children who were living in their van since being evacuated.

"We could probably rent that thing for $500 a month, but I told my husband there's no way I'm going to be greedy," Eide, 62, said by phone. "God just had better plans for our camper than renting it."

She was preparing to haul it to Minot with a load of canned tomatoes and green beans, a grill, propane and other supplies. "I think we've got 'em covered," she said.

Mike Pancoast and his wife Kari, both associate pastors at First Lutheran Church, were staying with Minot State campus pastor Kari Williamson after the rising river threatened their church and adjacent brick parsonage. Like Johnson, they didn't know how high the waters would rise, but were confident enough to move most of their clothes and other belongings to higher floors instead of removing them. Their four children were staying with her parents in Minnesota.

"We've kept it together pretty well, although it's not to say we're a solid rock through this," Mike Pancoast said, sipping coffee at the kitchen table of Williamson's ranch-style house. "It's one thing to go and visit somebody and stay in their house and enjoy their hospitality for a couple of days. It's another thing to move in indefinitely and wonder have we overstayed our welcome?"

Johnson was staying with parishioners David and Laurie Weber. Their teenage sons, Preston and Dylan, accompanied him to Velva after spending Thursday on their bikes, going door-to-door to help evacuees move furniture.

A common sight was garages packed with televisions, books, clothing and other items as residents turned their homes into temporary storage units for flood victims. Williamson was keeping things for students at Minot State.

Across the street, a trailer stuffed with household belongings stood in Derek Cumbie's driveway. His garage was a veritable warehouse after several friends dropped off their things.

Two were staying with Cumbie, 26, a captain at Minot Air Force Base.

"I've been really impressed with how people in this community are helping each other, so I wanted to do my part," he said.

On Friday, the river had been expected to peak at about 9 feet above major flood stage, but it leveled off and rose by only tiny amounts Saturday. The National Weather Service dropped the projection by just more than 2 feet as upstream flows weakened. Ayd said a storm that hit the city Saturday night had little effect.

City officials applauded when Minot Mayor Curt Zimbelman announced the peak forecast at a news conference. He warned the sustained high water flows were likely to last for three to four days, enough to put significant strain on the city's newly built earthen levees.

"You've got that deterioration on the dikes. If you see how fast that water is moving, it's scary," Zimbelman said. "We're concerned that we can hold it, and it's critical that we keep a vigilant eye on this."

Minot's Broadway Street bridge over the Souris, which is its most important connection between the north and south sections of the city, is likely to remain closed until the crest recedes, the mayor said.

On Sunday, North Dakota National Guard soldiers were monitoring a submerged pedestrian bridge to make sure it didn't break off in the river channel. The bridge has been trapping debris and could harm nearby levees. Guard commander David Sprynczynatyk said soldiers were ready to pull it out if it came loose.

Problems at Minot's water treatment plant prompted the state Department of Health to issue a "boil order" on Saturday for users of city water. It also applies to the Minot Air Force Base, about 13 miles north of town, which gets its drinking water from Minot's municipal system.

Zimbelman said city officials were "not completely sure at this point" that Minot's water supply had been contaminated.

"It has not been fully tested ... to show that it is contaminated," Zimbelman said. "There is just a concern at this point, so we're taking precautions."

Bowel cancer (colorectal)

Colorectal cancer, less formally known as bowel cancer, is a cancer characterized by neoplasia in the colon, rectum, or vermiform appendix. Colorectal cancer is clinically distinct from anal cancer, which affects the anus.

Colorectal cancers start in the lining of the bowel. If left untreated, it can grow into the muscle layers underneath, and then through the bowel wall. Most begin as a small growth on the bowel wall: a colorectal polyp or adenoma. These mushroom-shaped growths are usually benign, but some develop into cancer over time. Localized bowel cancer is usually diagnosed through colonoscopy.

Invasive cancers that are confined within the wall of the colon (TNM stages I and II) are often curable with surgery, For example, in England and Wales over 90% of patients diagnosed at this stage will survive the disease beyond 5 years. If left untreated, they spread to regional lymph nodes (stage III). In England and Wales, around 48% of patients diagnosed at this stage survive the disease beyond five years. Cancer that metastasizes to distant sites (stage IV) is usually not curable; approximately 7% of patients in England and Wales diagnosed at this stage survive beyond five years.

Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world, but it is more common in developed countries. More than half of the people who die of colorectal cancer live in a developed region of the world. GLOBOCAN estimated that, in 2008, 1.23 million new cases of colorectal cancer were clinically diagnosed, and that this type of cancer killed more than 600,000 people.

How common is bowel cancer?

In England, bowel cancer is the third most common type of cancer. An estimated 38,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

In 2007, about 17,600 cases of bowel cancer were diagnosed in women, making it the second most common cancer in women after breast cancer. There were about 21,000 cases in men, making it the third most common cancer after prostate and lung cancer.

Approximately 80% of bowel cancer cases develop in people who are 60 or over. Two-thirds of bowel cancers develop in the colon, with the remaining third developing in the rectum.

In England, an estimated 16,000 people die from bowel cancer each year.

Factors that increase your risk of getting bowel cancer include:

Age: around 80% of people diagnosed with bowel cancer are over 60.

Diet: a diet high in fibre and low in saturated fat could reduce your bowel cancer risk. A diet high in red or processed meats can increase your risk.

Healthy weight: leaner people are less likely to develop bowel cancer than obese people.

Exercise: being inactive increases the risk of getting bowel cancer.

Alcohol and smoking: high alcohol intake and smoking may increase your chances of getting bowel cancer.

Family history and inherited conditions: having a close relative with bowel cancer puts you at much greater risk of developing the disease.

Related conditions: having certain bowel conditions can put you more at risk of getting bowel cancer.

Bowel cancer screening

In 2006, the NHS launched a screening programme for bowel cancer. It is recommended that everyone between the ages of 60 and 69 is screened every two years.

Screening is carried out by taking a small stool sample and testing it for the presence of blood.

Screening plays an important part in the fight against bowel cancer because the earlier the cancer is diagnosed, the greater the chance that it can be cured completely.

For more information, see Bowel cancer ? screening.

What can you do yourself?

Prevention and early diagnosis

Ensure a regular daily intake of green vegetables, particularly brassicas (cabbage, broccoli, sprouts or cauliflower). Do not eat red meat (beef and lamb) more than about once per week. Keep your weight normal and take regular exercise.
See your doctor to discuss screening if you have a first-degree relative who has developed bowel cancer before the age of 45, or if you have two or more first-degree relatives who have developed bowel cancer.
See your doctor promptly if you notice rectal bleeding (other than very occasional spotting on the paper only), diarrhoea that persists for more than a week, recurring lower abdominal pain or persistent tiredness or shortness of breath.

Treatment

Once a cancer has developed, treatment is aimed at removing the original (primary) growth and at preventing secondary spread. This will be with some combination of surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
You should:

ensure that you seek advice as early as possible after symptoms develop.
get good nutrition.
stay positive, remembering that more than half of patients with bowel cancer are cured.

Do not hesitate to nag, or have someone nag on your behalf, if you feel you are not being investigated or treated appropriately or speedily.

What can your doctor do?

Once the diagnosis of bowel cancer has been made, the first treatment is usually surgical removal of the cancerous tumour under general anaesthetic.

If the cancer is in the rectum, the operation will usually be accompanied by radiotherapy (by external beam irradiation) to reduce the risk of tumours reappearing in the same area. The radiotherapy may sometimes be given first, followed a few months later by the surgery.

For cancer of the colon, radiotherapy is not routinely used, but if examination of cells from the removed cancer shows that the cancer has spread to lymph glands, then some form of chemotherapy will normally be given, usually oral 5-fluorouracil combined with either folinic acid (eg Leucovorin) or levamisole. Chemotherapy is very likely to cause side effects, including nausea and hair loss, but the nausea can usually be well controlled by drugs.

In any form of bowel surgery, the patient is normally warned that the surgeon might have to create a colostomy stoma (opening of the bowel onto the abdomen that is covered by a bag). This might be a temporary measure to divert faeces from the site of the bowel that has been repaired after removal of the tumour.

If the tumour is very low down in the rectum, then the primary operation will include cutting out and closing the anus (abdomino-perineal resection) so the stoma will be permanent. Fortunately, modern stoma accessories are excellent, and colostomies are generally well managed and odour free.

In most cases, a bowel cancer higher up the colon can be surgically removed and the bowel repaired without the need for a colostomy.

The average length of stay in hospital for bowel cancer surgery is about 7 to 10 days. The abdominal wound is usually in the middle of the abdomen. Stitches will be removed by about 7 to 10 days, but the scar will usually cause some discomfort for four to six weeks. Pain relief immediately after the operation should nowadays be very effective and is often under the patient?s own control.

The best way to monitor patients after surgery is not yet clearly established, but some surgeons review patients at regular intervals to have a blood test done (carcino-embryonic antigen) to look for any evidence that the cancer has returned. This test is partly done because tumours that have re-appeared in the same area can be removed and partly because surgeons are now more optimistic about the chances of curing bowel cancer that has spread to the liver, provided it is caught early.

Sportsmen monitor gas drilling in Marcellus Shale (AP)

WHITELEY, Pa. ? Fishermen are gearing up and hunters are taking aim at Marcellus Shale gas drilling.

A new coalition of outdoors groups has emerged as a potent force in the debate over natural gas drilling.

The Sportsmen Alliance for Marcellus Conservation isn't against the process of fracking for gas, but its members want to ensure the rush to cash in on the valuable resource doesn't damage streams, forests, and the creatures calling those places home.

The movement has grown from grass-roots anger as passionate outdoorsmen found their questions about drilling and wildlife brought few answers from local or state officials.

[PLEASE READ] Saluting the historic TV-Movie Event! This is a ?prime-time? power video of goodwill, admiration, and respect featuring vintage ?Hollywood? highlights of the best professional-sports cheerleading organization in the world (since 1972). Although the TV movie featured a handful of actresses?Jane Seymour, Pamela Susan Shoop, and others??posing? as (wannabe) cheerleaders, actual 1978 Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders unmistakably (and necessarily) dominate the final squad. Also ?playing themselves? in the film are original DCC choreographer Texie Waterman, Cowboys VP Gil Brandt, Texas Stadium executive Bert Rose, DFW radio personality Ron Chapman, and Dallas attorney WW Mitchell. The movie?s plot?journalist goes undercover to ?get some dirt? on the DCC during tryouts for the squad?is virtually ignored in favor of focusing on the cheerleader audition process and the emotions, distractions, and diversions of the participating girls along the way. Unremarkable teleplay dialogue is lifted by the sincerity and poise of Laraine Stephens (as original DCC director Suzanne Mitchell), the vulnerable appeal and striking beauty of Ellen Bry (ST. ELSEWHERE), the insouciant self-promotion of gorgeous Kathrine Baumann, the pluck and commitment of Lauren Tewes (THE LOVE BOAT), the fears and faith of Pamela Susan Shoop, and the characteristic glow of star Jane Seymour (DR. An Insight To Diabetes And Exercise

Diabetes is a condition that occurs when a person?s body does not secrete enough insulin. Diabetes may also occur due to the improper use of insulin in the body. In a diabetic, high levels of sugar build up in the blood instead of moving in to the cells. There are two major types of diabetes namely Type 1, where the body does not produce any insulin and Type 2 is where the cells ignore the secreted insulin.

Diabetes and exercise: Exercise helps a diabetic in many ways, such as controlling weight and maintaining blood sugar levels. Those suffering from diabetes can have a control on it by doing routine exercises every day. It is essential consulting your family physician before starting on any exercise. Even though we all know that diabetes can be kept under control with exercises, it is necessary to learn the exact type of exercise that will be helpful in controlling blood sugar levels. Exercise for diabetes greatly depends on other health problems present in the patients.

Aerobic exercises: This form of exercise is recommended for many suffering from diabetes. This is mainly because aerobic exercises involve deep breathing and at the same time makes the heart work harder. Jogging, walking, cycling and aerobic dance come under this category of exercises. Most doctors feel that diabetes and exercise are directly linked. But it is essential doing exercises that suits your body nature. Walking is the simplest form of exercise that can be followed by any one. Aerobic exercises helps in increasing insulin sensitivity.

Strength training: Diabetes and exercise go hand-in-hand. The person who has diabetes, but no other health problems can do strength training. This training helps with weight maintenance and is also safe. Strength training provides a lot of health benefits. It helps in increasing lean mass and also aids in increasing the glucose uptake by the muscles. Many people feel that diabetes can be kept under control only with medication. This is definitely a wrong notion. For a diabetic patient to feel good and lead a complete life, exercise is very important and plays a major role in maintaining the right sugar levels in the body.

Apart from maintaining blood sugar levels, exercise also helps in reducing the severity of the disease. Exercising can greatly help in reducing the risk of long-term complications. It is very important warming up before exercise and cooling down after. To derive the maximum benefit of exercising, warm up and cool down is absolutely vital. Before starting your routine exercises spend at least five to ten minutes warming up to loosen your stiff muscles. Walking is one of the best warm ups. Then gradually start with your routine exercises. Once you are finished with exercising, remember to cool down with simple stretches. Diabetes and exercise, though inseparable, may at times pose unique challenges and must be done in consultation with your doctor. Note further information about the condition at http://diabetesandexercise.org/.

Exercising is sure to help you in improving your blood sugar level and boosting your over all fitness.

Health and Fitness Articles ? Blog Archive ? The Best Methods of ...

Sports injuries are a nightmare for all athletes. Having just a single injury is lucky, in the sense that it could be worse if you had a number of injuries coming from the same place. I had to quit my favorite sport of running because of an enduring knee problem, so I fully understand the anger and sadness felt by those with sports injuries.

However, you shouldn?t be too put down by a sports injury, because nowadays sports medicine can go a long way. One area that can easily be neglected is your mind, and believe me your mind has to be tended to, as well. Below are some ideas on how you can cope with a sports injury, but let?s hope you never have to do them.

Foot injuries can be one of the worst for a lot of reasons and the recovery period often lasts a long time. Common foot injuries include bruising on the heel, strained ligaments and fractures. Another injury that takes a very long time to get normal again is a sprained or twisted ankle. You should remember to not use your foot if it?s injured otherwise it won?t heal.

Your feet support all of your body weight, which puts pressure on them. At times it may be tempting to see how your foot is progressing. By doing this you will most likely antagonize your injury further, meaning it?ll take longer to heal.

You?ve sustained and injury and the doctor has treated it. There are a few possibilities for you depending on what injury you sustained. Providing you use some sort of protective clothing you may be allowed to play again.

However you might not be allowed to continue playing, and you may also need physical therapy. You have to allow your body to heal properly, so it is critical for you to follow what your doctor advises for you. At this stage you need to give your body adequate nutrition as well as rest.

If you need physical therapy, be sure to go to every appointment. Your physical therapist will work with you to help you get better and back into the game. Your meetings with the therapist are also an excellent time to talk about whatever is on your mind about your injury. Chances are your physical therapist has be educated in the psychological aspects of the healing process. You will at least get reassurances for your concerns. You can lessen the stress of being injured by unloading a little bit to someone who understands.

Joint strains and sprains, knee injuries, muscle swelling and dislocations are all more common injures from sports. If you have a non-debilitating injury your best to let your body take time out to rest and accept that it has happened. Avoid fighting the obvious, in your mind, because that only causes unnecessary stress.
