Nonprofit Credit Counseling Agency Approved by HUD to Provide Reverse Mortgage Counseling

Debt Management Credit Counseling Corp (http://www.dmcconline.org), a nonprofit organization (?DMCC?), has been approved by HUD to provide Reverse Mortgage counseling. Reverse mortgages provide seniors the ability to obtain cash utilizing the equity in their homes. Seniors interested in pursuing an FHA reverse mortgage should contact DMCC for a free loan estimate and information.

Lighthouse Point, FL (PRWEB) May 31, 2012

Debt Management Credit Counseling Corp (dmcconline.org), a 501c3 nonprofit organization (?DMCC?), announced today they have been designated an Approved Housing Counseling Agency by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) counseling. HECM loans, commonly known as reverse mortgages, provide seniors 62 years or older the ability to obtain lump sums or monthly payments utilizing the equity in their homes. HUD approval demonstrates that DMCC has met industry standards and federal guidelines. DMCC offers?Reverse Mortgage Counseling?face-to-face at its Lighthouse Point office location and over the telephone nationwide.

Reverse mortgages are popular with seniors who have equity in their homes and want to supplement their income or purchase a new home. A reverse mortgage enables the borrower to withdraw some of the equity in their primary residence. The borrower chooses how they want to withdraw the available funds; typically lump sum or monthly. There are many factors to consider with a reverse mortgage and eligibility requirements that must be met. Seniors age 62 or older without a mortgage, or who have paid off a substantial portion of their existing mortgage, may be eligible for the Federal Housing Administration?s (FHA) HECM program. To be eligible for a FHA HECM, the FHA requires borrowers to obtain a certificate from a HUD Approved Housing Agency within six months of applying for a reverse mortgage loan stating they have completed a reverse mortgage counseling session and are aware of the requirements, implications and financing alternatives.

?Reverse mortgages can be very beneficial to retired seniors. However, it is imperative that any senior considering a reverse mortgage fully understand all the mortgage terms and conditions.?, said Jason Athas, DMCC Manager of Educational Services. DMCC has certified reverse mortgage counselors that will discuss the prospective borrower?s personal situation and provide the counseling required by the FHA. DMCC counselors are prepared to answer all questions regarding reverse mortgages, including available payment plans and costs. Following the required counseling, DMCC will provide the prospective borrower an official certificate that must be presented to any lender from which they seek a reverse mortgage loan. To schedule an appointment with a DMCC counselor, seniors should call (866) 618-3328 or request to be contacted online athttp://www.dmcccorp.org/reversemortgagecounseling. Emergency counseling is provided for those individuals that need a reverse mortgage to cover the cost of a medical emergency or avoid foreclosure.

Did you know that cockroaches have such large nerves in their legs that you can poke into their legs almost at random and hit a nerve with an electrode so you can stimulate that leg with hip-hop music and and watch it move? And that you can easily order the parts to do this at home or at school? You can. And supplies to perform many other neuroscience experiments, too. Amaze your friends! Learn how neurons work! Gross out squeamish people! All that (and more) is what Backyard Brains is about.

Drug Used for Schizophrenia May Check CancerResearchers report that an antipsychotic drug sometimes used to treat schizophrenia appears to influence cancer stem cells to differentiate into less threatening cell types.

Investigators believe the discovery will be followed with a clinical trial. The findings are reported in the journal Cell.

In the study, scientists analyzed hundreds of compounds in search of those that would selectively inhibit human cancer stem cells.?You have to find something that?s truly selective for cancer stem cells,? said Mickie Bhatia, lPh.D., lead author of the study from McMaster University. ?We?ve been working for some time and it?s hard to find that exact formula.?

The research represents a new approach for cancer intervention, a necessary approach as the survival of cancer patients is largely unchanged from 30 years ago.

The new approach for cancer targets rare and chemotherapy-resistant cancer stem cells. Unlike normal stem cells, cancer stem cells resist differentiating into stable, non-dividing cell types.

Bhatia?s team exploited this difference to simultaneously screen compounds for their activity against human cancer stem cells versus normal human stem cells.

By testing hundreds of compounds, they identified nearly 20 potential cancer stem cell specific drugs.

The one that appeared most promising is an antipsychotic drug, thioridazine, which combats the symptoms of schizophrenia by targeting dopamine receptors in the brain. But concerns about side effects of the drug, brand name Mellaril, have meant that far fewer people with schizophrenia are prescribed the drug than newer antipsychotic medications.

Researchers say thioridazine doesn?t appear to kill cancer stem cells, but rather encourages them to differentiate, thus exhausting the pool of self-renewing cells.

Investigators discovered thioridazine kills leukemia stem cells without affecting normal blood stem cells by comparing the proteins in leukemia versus normal blood cells.

Furthermore, leukemia cells, but not normal blood stem cells, express a dopamine receptor on their surfaces. This finding is supported by the discovery of dopamine receptors on some breast cancer stem cells.

?This gives us some explanation,? Bhatia said. It also suggests that dopamine receptors might serve as a biomarker for rare, tumor-initiating cells.

In light of the findings, Bhatia?s team is already planning for a clinical trial of the FDA-approved thioridazine in combination with standard anti-cancer drugs for adult acute myeloid leukemia.

?We?re excited about bringing this drug to patients,? Bhatia said. ?We also hope our platform can now be a pipeline for other cancer stem cells drugs.?

Shakil Afridi Trial: Family Of Pakistan Doctor In Bin Laden Hunt Calls Trial A Sham

PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- The family of the Pakistani doctor sentenced to 33 years in prison for helping the United States track down Osama bin Laden said Monday the man is innocent and dismissed his trial as a sham.

The conviction of Shakil Afridi last week added another pressure point in Pakistan's already fractured relationship with the U.S. Senior American officials have urged Pakistan to release the doctor, and regard him as a hero who worked to stop the terrorist leader. Islamabad views Afridi as a traitor who colluded with a foreign intelligence agency in an illegal operation on Pakistani soil.

Afridi ran a vaccination campaign on behalf of the CIA to collect blood samples of bin Laden's family at a compound in Abbottabad where U.S. commandos killed the al-Qaida leader in May 2011. The samples were intended to help the U.S. match the family's DNA to verify his presence in the garrison city.

Afridi's older brother Jamil and two lawyers representing the doctor said at a news conference in the frontier city of Peshawar that they will appeal the verdict, which was handed down last week in a tribal court whose proceedings were never made public.

"This was a one-sided decision," said Jamil. "All allegations against him are false. He didn't do anything against the national interest."

Afridi was tried under the Frontier Crimes Regulations, the set of laws that govern Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal region. The FCR doesn't allow suspects to have legal representation, present material evidence or cross-examine witnesses. Verdicts are handled by a government official in consultation with a council of elders, instead of by a judge.

The raid by American commandos infuriated Pakistani officials who were not told ahead of time or of the CIA operation in their country to track him down. Afridi was arrested in the weeks after the raid. He was convicted and sentenced last week for conspiring against the state.

The lawyers said authorities have not given them documents related to the case, including a copy of the verdict.

Afridi's brother said the doctor had an American visa and pointed out that he stayed in Pakistan after the bin Laden raid for 20 days, and didn't leave the country.

"Had he been guilty, he would have escaped," Jamil Afridi said.

He did not comment on whether he thought his brother should have helped the U.S.

The case puts the family in a delicate situation. Anti-American sentiment is widespread in Pakistan, and people who are viewed as supporting the U.S. or working for Washington are sometimes targeted by militants, especially in the tribal areas.

In his first comments on Afridi's conviction, Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani called Afridi's actions "wrong" but said he had the right to a fair trial.

"He should be given a right to justice," Gilani said in an interview to Geo TV to be broadcast Monday night. Asked how would he could get justice, Gilani said, "through the normal courts."

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Sunday criticized Pakistan over Afridi's conviction and sentencing, calling it "disturbing."

U.S.-Pakistani relations plummeted to new lows in November, when American airstrikes inadvertently killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, prompting Islamabad to block U.S. and NATO supply lines into Afghanistan.

Pakistan has demanded an apology over the raid and an end to drone strikes against militants along the Afghan border as a precursor to reopening the supply lines.

The U.S. has shown no sign of stopping the covert CIA attacks, which have picked up pace this week after a lull for most of the year. The latest attack came late Sunday and killed five suspected Islamist militants in North Waziristan region, Pakistani officials said Monday. The identities of the dead were not known, but the region is home to al-Qaida militants and insurgents fighting in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The attack was the fourth in less than a week.

Report: Israel Killed 55 Civilians in Occupied Territories in 2012

The annual Amnesty International report on human rights has once again faulted the Israeli government for its regular use of excessive force against Palestinian civilians, and put the overall death toll at 55 civilians, including 11 children. Three other civilians were killed by settlers in the past year.

The report also touches on Israel?s ?administrative detention? policy, which keeps over 300 Palestinians in prison indefinitely without any charges or trial. Palestinians in Israeli custody are also subject to regular torture.

It goes on to criticize Israeli restrictions on Palestinian civilian freedom of movement, noting that in the West Bank the military often keeps farmers away from their own land. Israel?s blockade and harsh restrictions on imports and exports has also exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

The report also slammed the Palestinian Authority for violations of human rights, noting that both Fatah and Hamas have regularly attacked civilian supporters of the rival faction.

Bud weakens to tropical storm off Mexico's coast

(AP) PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico - Bud weakened to a tropical storm Friday as it headed toward a string of laid-back beach resorts and small mountain villages on Mexico's Pacific coast south of Puerto Vallarta. Two people, one of them from France, were reported missing in a separate storm in Cuba.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, said that maximum sustained winds that were once blowing at 115 mph (185 kph) had slowed to 70 mph (113 kph) Friday night.

The government of Mexico changed the hurricane warning for the coast of Mexico from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes to a tropical storm warning. Hurricane watches were also discontinued.

Forecasters said the storm would continue to weaken and the center would move over land late Friday or Saturday.

Rainfall was expected to accumulate from 6 to 10 inches in many spots and Mexican authorities canceled school in 11 communities expected to be hit by heavy rains in Jalisco state. Emergency workers prepared emergency shelters, many of them in empty school classrooms.

Heavy rains and 6-foot (2-meter) high waves pelted Melaque, a beach town on the Bahia de Navidad, about 60 mph (100 kilometers) east of the sparsely populated stretch of coast where the storm's center was expected to come ashore during the night.

Rafael Galvez, manager of the Hotel Bahia in Melaque, said his staff would to board up windows before Bud's arrival.

"I went through Wilma in Cancun," which hit as a Category 4, Galvez said. "This is a little less severe."

Category 2 Hurricane Jova hit the area in October, killing six people and flooding parts of Melaque and neighboring Barra de Navidad.

"There was a lot of flooding in the whole area, and we lost electricity," Galvez recalled. But this week, he said, only seven of his hotel's 26 rooms were occupied, and none of the hotel's guests were planning to leave.

The hurricane center said the storm would hit land, move a little inland and then make a U-turn and head back out into the Pacific. Rain, rather than wind, could be the big threat, with the center warning of the "potential for life-threatening mudslides" in steep terrain inland.

The government of Jalisco state prepared hundreds of cots and dozens of heavy vehicles such as bulldozers that could be needed to move debris.

Jalisco's civil defense office said two shelters had been opened in Cihuatlan, a town just inland from Melaque that was hard hit by flooding from Jova.

The region is experienced at handling hurricanes, Galvez noted. "The government planning has helped a lot," he noted.

Officials in Puerto Vallarta said they were in close contact with managers of the hundreds of hotels in the city in case tourists need to move to eight emergency shelters. It said the sea along the city's famous beachfront was calm, but swimming had been temporarily banned as a precaution.

A separate storm was pounding much of Cuba and the Bahamas on Friday. Cuba's civil defense agency reported that a French citizen, Alain Manaud, and Silvestre Fortun Alvarez of Cuba were missing after trying to cross rain-swollen rivers, according to the government's Prensa Latina news agency. It said a search for them was continuing.

An official at the French Embassy in Havana said Manaud was 66 and had lived in Cuba for several years. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly.

The agency quoted government meteorologists as saying more than 20 inches (500 millimeters) of rain had fallen on parts of the central province of Sancti Spiritus.

The U.S. hurricane center reported that the system had about a 70 percent chance of becoming a tropical or subtropical cyclone.

Understanding Of The Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF Will Work For You ...

One of the latest computers to hit the market is the Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF, made by the Dell Corporation ? it is a unique computer like none you have ever seen. Any business owner that has a network of computers, and I would like to upgrade to a USFF (ultra small form factor) design will love the new OptiPlex computer line. Designed for offices with limited space, but that have many computers, these PCs are perfect for such a situation.

Dell OptiPlex 780 computers feature Intel vPro technology, which many businesses find useful. This is an advanced hardware technology that gives you remote access to computers, even when they?re not turned on. You can monitor and manage the computers in your network from anywhere you like and the system is also safer thanks to the security technologies it features. These features are built into the computer?s motherboard and hardware.

Dell can tell you everything you need to know about these facilities, but remember that it?s something that?s more useful for a company. If you are worried about security and have multiple computers you need to maintain and manage, then you will find vPro technology quite handy. If you are purchasing it for your business, the fact that the Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF can be service easily is important. If you a large number of computers in your office, it won?t take you long to realize that even the most efficient unit can suffer from various issues. You can access the drives from a pop-out panel if they need to be repaired or replaced. You can?t expand or upgrade a USFF type computer since they aren?t designed for it, which can be a significant drawback. You can?t upgrade the graphics, for example, if the integrated GMA 4500 board isn?t sufficient for your needs, which means you might want to purchase another unit. This might not be such a major issue, considering the line was designed specifically for businesses.

If you are a business owner, and you need a new computer, you must get it for the right price to fit the budget that you must conform to. Although the Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF is packed with lots of features and benefits, it is not exactly the most inexpensive computer out there. If you want the ultra-small form factor design, you have to pay a little extra. While the prices have come down since 2010, when this model was first introduced, you?ll still have to pay more for the luxury of having this compact design. This computer is more expensive ($200 more than others) so you need to determine if it is worth the money. For anyone who needs the extra space, or doesn?t like the look of bulky desktop towers, it?s worth it. Sometimes price becomes an issue. If this is the case for you, shop around for the best deal that you can find. There are many companies that have considered the Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF to be a highly effective unit. You don?t need quite as much room as a standard desktop and it does allow the user to create a system that is suitable for their needs.

If you want a computer to use mainly as entertainment or for personal usage, then look in other places, but the Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF is a great option for a company.

Dish takes TV networks to court over ad zapper

The maker of a new digital video recorder that lets viewers skip television commercials at the touch of a button has asked a federal judge to let it sell the product, in a challenge to broadcast TV networks that oppose the technology.

Dish Network Corp on Thursday asked for a court order that its "Auto Hop" feature does not infringe any copyright owned by the four major U.S. television networks: Walt Disney Co's ABC, CBS Corp's CBS, News Corp's Fox and Comcast Corp's NBC.

It filed its request with the U.S. District Court in Manhattan.

How To Build A Home With Great House Design House Plans ...

How To Build A Home With Great House Design House Plans

By: Seo5 Consulting

Building a custom home is one of the most rewarding homeowner experiences. After obtaining house plans, property to build on and hiring contractors, the work toward a dream home is well underway. The decision to build a home from the ground up involves a lot of important decision making. This will establish factors for the future house in every detail from deciding between house plans, to select the right layout, to the materials used for the kitchen cabinets.

Benefits of a Custom Home Include:

? 100% customization for every detail. Even house plans can be modified to suit tastes and preferences. The ability to have the final say in all of the work that will go into the building of a home creates a house that will be perfectly suited to the homeowner?s exact specifications, and allows for a more comfortable and rewarding final result.

? Purchasing the lot will assist with the advantages to custom building. It?s one of the most important details of the home building process. The property can dictate everything from the materials used, to the direction the house will face. Plenty of time should be spent on the property, to get a feel for the land, and to think of an ideal house plan to match the landscape and neighborhood.

? Avoiding builder?s grade appliances. Building a custom home involves picking out appliances. When a pre-built home is purchased, generally the kitchen appliances are builder?s grade. This means that they are not as high quality, and are plainer in design than is typically preferred. By installing high quality appliances of choice, the lifespan will be longer, and having the choice will guarantee a better match with the d?cor.

Before buying a plan check to be sure that it conforms to standards including the International Residential Code [IRC] and the Uniform Building Code [UBC]. The house plan can be modified to conform to the standards of states or countries but it is still well advised to read, research and consult with your architect regarding this matter. After deciding on the house plan that is perfect for the property, and suits needs and lifestyle, the next step is to continue the process of building the home. Some of these steps include:

? A Materials List

This list will tell the contractor all of the materials that have been decided upon to build the house including fixtures, molding and paint.

? A Building Material List

The items on this list will detail the construction materials required such as the lumber, concrete and nails.

Building a custom home is full of decisions but they are well worth it for a home that will be loved and enjoyed by its occupants today, and by their future generations tomorrow.

Great House Design provides house plans to their customers who are building new homes.

Hepatitis C-related illnesses, such as liver cancer and cirrhosis, result in 15,000 deaths each year. And, because baby boomers account for more than 75 percent of all American adults infected with hepatitis C, most of those deaths occur among the boomer generation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released new guidelines recommending all baby boomers get a one time test, due to the fact that many people infected with the virus don?t know it because there are few noticeable symptoms. If all baby boomers were tested it could potentially identify as many as 800,000 additional people living with hepatitis C. And, because newly developed medical treatments can cure up to 75 percent of infections, the recommended test could prevent thousands of deaths. According to the CDC, baby boomers are five times more likely to be infected with hepatitis C than other adults. More here and here.

Budgeting: One Size Doesn?t Fit All Mr. Allen

I was browsing a bookstore the other day and picked up a decorating book by Ethan Allen. Good book as far as coffee table books go. Lots of pictures, ideas I wouldn?t have thought of myself, and in general, a good flow. But there was this one paragraph that made me so angry I slammed the book shut and left the store. Want to know what the paragraph said? I?ll tell you. It said ?you must budget for decorating. Otherwise, a new couch will always seem out of reach.? That?s all it said, so you can see how my fit of rage may have been a bit out of line.

Why did I get so angry at that particular moment you ask? Well, it had to do with the fact that the week before, I had just started a??oh @#$%??fund for all the things that creep up that I don?t like. Things like parking tickets, car repairs, and dry cleaning (yes-dry cleaning). I had also decided to start a gift fund to save for the incredible amount of gifts I now buy for people.? Baby showers, wedding showers, friends birthdays, friends kids birthdays, etc. These funds were started on top of my house emergency fund, RRSP?s, and regular savings, which meant I was up to 5 savings buckets! Let me be clear here, I don?t make a six figure salary?not even close. Like most people, I?m just trying to do the best I can. So you could see how I might be a little alarmed at this decorating book suggesting I now had to make an additional savings account so my home looked magazine worthy.

Insert me slamming the book shut and storming out of the bookstore.? As I walked along the street in a huff, I realized something. Probably something you?ve already figured out. Budgeting is essential to get to your financial goals but the reason budgeting is great is because it tailor made for everyone.?No two budgets are alike. If decorating isn?t your thing (like me), then there is no need or reason to budget for it. Plain and simple.

I?m never going to be one of those people who needs a new couch every few years. I like my furniture to stick around for a while and the latest and greatest just doesn?t appeal to me. But that doesn?t mean it?s not important to you! And if it is, it should be in your budget! What?s important to me is saving for a rainy day (RRSP?s and emergency funds) dining out, gift giving and not being caught off guard by a stupid parking ticket. I have tempered my budget based on the kind of risk I am ready to take and how prepared I like to be for certain situations. Your budget might include rainy day savings, a clothing allowance, a magazine subscription and a vacation fund. My budget will never be your budget and vice versa. Perhaps, after reading this you will take Ethan Allen?s advice and set aside some money for decorating. I on the other hand will throw a blanket over my couch and call it new?and the folks at Ethan Allen will just have to be okay with that.

There You Go Again

Nor, of course, is the phenomenon unique to writers. This week, with the release of Moonrise Kingdom, Wes Anderson will offer us another elegantly stylized film about youngsters from dysfunctional families being impassively precocious, and Bill Murray being Bill Murray. Philip Glass, who in some ways seems like the most extreme test case in any art form, has been getting by just fine for decades on a very small bag of musical tricks. It would be hard to argue that he?s the kind of artist who goes out on an aesthetic limb, but it would be much harder to argue that he?s not a distinctive and important composer.

There will obviously always be people who keep creating variations of the same basic work to ever-diminishing creative returns. Paul Auster, to take a prominent example, has probably pushed the guy-recovering-from-a-tragedy setup and the novel-within-a-novel device about as far as is artistically profitable. Woody Allen has spent much of the last couple of decades not fixing what he (if not his critics) feels pretty confident ain?t broke. But repetition per se is not necessarily a symptom of being stuck in a rut. He probably won?t, but you get the sense that Vann could keep on writing books in which tragic things happen in cabins without ever exhausting the human possibilities of such an apparently straightening scenario. One artist?s rut, after all, is another?s groove, and Dirt is a fine and unsettling example of the distinction between the two.

Planet X? New Evidence for an Unseen Planet at Solar System's Edge

A planet four times the size of Earth may be skirting the edges of the solar system beyond Pluto, according to new research. Too distant to be easily spotted by Earth-based telescopes, the unseen planet could be gravitationally tugging on small icy objects past Neptune, helping explain the mystery of those objects' peculiar orbits.

The claim comes from Rodney Gomes, a noted astronomer at the?National Observatory of Brazil?in Rio de Janeiro. Gomes presented his recently completed computer models suggesting the existence of the distant planet at a meeting of the?American Astronomical Society?in Timberline Lodge, Ore., earlier this month.

Astronomers who attended the talk find Gomes' arguments compelling, but they say much more evidence is needed before the hypothetical planet can be crowned as real.

For several years, astronomers have observed that a handful of the small icy bodies that lie in the so-called "scattered disc" beyond the orbit of the planet Neptune, including the dwarf planet Sedna, deviate from the paths around the sun that would be expected based on the gravitational pulls of all the?known objects in the solar system.

Sedna, for example, swings around the sun in an extremely elongated orbit ? tracing out a very long oval. "Sedna's orbit is truly peculiar," said Mike Brown, an astronomer at Caltech who led the team that discovered Sedna in 2003.

However, when Gomes ran the same calculations with the addition of the gravitational pull of a massive planet at the outskirts of the solar system, Sedna and the other anomalous objects' expected orbits fell in line with observations. The unseen planet would be too far away to perceptibly perturb the motions of Earth and the other inner planets, but close enough to the scattered disc objects to sway them.?[The True Stories of 5 Mystery Planets]

Unknown entity

Several planet types could fit the disturbances seen in Gomes' calculations. For example, a Neptune-size planet, about four times bigger than Earth, orbiting 140 billion miles (225 billion kilometers) away from the sun would influence the anomalous objects in the observed manner. Or, a Mars-size planet with a highly elongated orbit ? but one that always kept it well beyond the orbit of Pluto ? could yield similar results. As for how it got there, the planet could have been born in and expelled from a distant star system and later captured by our sun's gravity, Gomes said, or it could have formed near our sun and gradually been thrust outward through gravitational interactions with the other planets.

Though Gomes' work has not yet been peer-reviewed, his colleagues are confident he got the math right. "[Gomes] is very good. It's hard to imagine he made a mistake in his calculations," said Hal Levison, a planetary scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo.?

"Rodney Gomes is actively seeking further evidence and I await his findings with interest!" Douglas Hamilton, an astronomer at the University of Maryland, told Life's Little Mysteries. "He has taken on a difficult task, but is taking the right approach. It is definitely a high risk, high reward, situation ? a discovery of a new planet would be spectacular!"

New planet or old star?

This would not be the first time a planet was revealed by way of its gravitational effects on other celestial bodies. The existence of Neptune was hypothesized at the turn of the 19th?century ? long before the gas giant was actually seen through a telescope in 1846 ? because of the way it was perturbing the orbit of Uranus.

On the other hand, many astronomers spent much of the 1900s searching for an extra planet, dubbed Planet X, beyond the orbit of Neptune, because they believed there were anomalies in the orbits of Neptune and the other gas giants. "But it turned out that anomaly in Neptune's orbit was the result of bad observation," Levison said. The search for Planet X was called off (though some conspiracy theorists believe this was a cover up of the planet Nibiru, which they say is on a collision course for Earth.)

"You can go back 100 years to claims of planets in the outer solar system and they've all eventually gone away," he continued. "That should give you pause for thought. Just because there's not a good explanation for [the orbits of the scattered disc objects] besides another planet, doesn't mean there won't be a good explanation in future."

Brown, who discovered Sedna, said another plausible explanation for that dwarf planet's strange behavior could be that a star swung near it early in the history of our solar system, throwing it for a loop. "Back at the time of the birth of the sun, the sun probably formed in a cluster of other stars. If true, they would have been close enough together to influence each other's outer planet systems, like where Sedna is," he said.

More work is needed to determine whether Sedna and the other scattered disc objects were sent on their circuitous trips round the sun by a star that passed by long ago, or by an unseen planet that exists in the solar system right now. Finding and observing the orbits of other distant objects similar to Sedna will add more data points to astronomers' computer models. "We, and a couple of other groups of astronomers, are working hard to see if we can track some down and figure out this mystery," Brown said.

As for the putative planet itself, Levison said, "The strength of the idea that there is a planet out there will be the inability to find another explanation for these objects. But seeing it is the only way to prove it."

A Word From Our Sponsor On Umbrella Liability And Excess ...

As you accumulate possessions, wealth, and other things, you might very likely have more and more need to protect them. The more you get, the more insurance you might require, in essence. You might have car insurance, health insurance, home, accident, sickness or disability insurance, etc. Each one of these different insurance plans will likely have different conditions, areas of coverage, and rates. But, what kind of insurance can you get that will cover more than just these basic, or primary, insurance plans? One answer is umbrella/excess liability insurance.
Umbrella liability insurance is a kind of policy that operates in addition to whatever primary policies you might have. It protects current and future assets in areas where your primary policies do not completely operate to your satisfaction. For example, if your primary insurance coverage doesn?t help you completely with a certain issue, your umbrella policy can come into effect to fill in the gaps. The limit applied to an umbrella policy can be added to an underlying policy?s limits, giving a greater total coverage.
Excess insurance works in a similar way to umbrella insurance, except that all underlying insurance policies have to be completely exhausted before excess insurance comes into play. It is useful to cover loss or damage the costs of which have already exceeded the coverage of other policies you may have. And so, umbrella/excess liability insurance can often be a financial life-safer. Click here to know more.

Science & the Public: Our increasingly not-so-little kids

A large share of U.S. kids ? especially the heftiest ? are on their way to life-threatening chronic disease

Web edition : Monday, May 21st, 2012

Little kids are meant to get big. Just not too quickly. When overfeeding spurs the girth of young children, youngsters find themselves propelled down the road towards diabetes and heart disease, a new study finds. In just the past decade, for instance, the share of kids with diabetes or pre-diabetes skyrocketed from 9 percent?to a whopping 23 percent.

And significant damage may be occurring before family physicians ? and parents ? realize what?s happening.

Earlier this year, researchers with the National Center for Health Statistics reported that 16.9 percent of U.S. children aged 2 to 19 are obese. Not pudgy, but clinically obese, they observed in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Add in those who aren?t fat so much as overweight and the number jumps to one-in-three kids 6 or older.

Now, researchers with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta?have examined key indicators of long-term health in kids. They used the same database that turned up the young heavyweights: the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which collects information on a nationally representative cross-section of the U.S. population.

Among children 12 and over, they now report, 14 percent have high blood pressure or pre-hypertension; 22 percent have borderline-high or high concentrations of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol ? the so-called bad type; 6 percent have low concentrations of the good cholesterol (the high-density-lipoprotein type); and 15 percent have diabetes or prediabetes. Although general risk factors for heart-health remained unchanged throughout the 9-year study period, incidence of diabetes and prediabetes more than doubled between 1999 to 2000 and 2007 to 2008. The CDC team?detailed its findings online May 21 in Pediatrics.

The diabetes-related trends stem from single, fasting blood-sugar readings from each child ? not an ideal assessment. So for now,?the authors recommend caution in interpreting these data.

Among children over 12, the study found, 49 percent of those who were overweight and 61 percent of those who were obese exhibited at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease ? in addition to their being too heavy. But even normal-weight kids were not home free: More than one in three also exhibited at least one cardiovascular risk factor.

The new data clearly indicate that?"a large proportion of adolescents, regardless of weight status, would benefit from . . . programs that promote overall healthy lifestyles, including physical activity, healthy diet, and healthy weight maintenance,? conclude the CDC?s Ashleigh May, Elena Kuklina and Paula Yoon. Not surprisingly, they also recommend that doctors pay more attention to the weight and activity levels of young patients.

But there?s a message in here for the rest of us as well. Parents and grandparents have to recognize that we?re doing the next generation no favor when we ignore the persistence of baby fat in children who are no longer babies. And if we allow this trend to persist unchecked, we?re soon going to jeopardize the ability of insurers to keep health care affordable for all as ever-larger numbers of youngsters develop?costly ? and preventable ? life-threatening conditions.

California Considers DNA Privacy Law

Image: Lawrence OP/Flickr

Showcasing more than fifty of the most provocative, original, and significant online essays from 2011, The Best Science Writing Online 2012 will change the way...

California lawmakers are weighing a bill aimed at protecting their state's citizens from surreptitious genetic testing but scientists are voicing their growing concerns that, if passed, such a law would have a costly and damaging effect on research.

The bill, dubbed the Genetic Information Privacy Act, would require an individual's written consent for the collection, analysis, retention, and sharing of his or her genetic information?including DNA, genetic test results, and even family disease history.

"It's becoming easier and quicker and cheaper for people to obtain their genetic profile or genetic information," says the bill's author, California state Senator Alex Padilla. "It's such sensitive and personal information that it ought to be protected," he says. Padilla also authored an earlier bill, enacted in January, which extended federal protections against genetic discrimination.

Under the newly proposed bill, a person's genetic information may only be accessed by individuals specifically named on a consent form, and only for purposes written on the form. Genetic information along with the original samples must be destroyed once their specified purposes are fulfilled.

Such requirements could seriously hinder genomic research, says geneticist David Segal, associate director of genomics at the University of California, Davis. He points out that scientists typically sequence DNA from thousands of people to discover genes associated with particular diseases. Under the proposed legislation, a large genomic dataset could not be re-used to study a different disease. Researchers would either need to destroy the data after each study, or track down thousands of former subjects for new authorizations?an infeasible task, he says.

"It's just an incredible proposition that the money and effort that would be spent to obtain those large datasets would be just thrown away," Segal adds. "California would be shut out of doing that kind of genetic research."

The University of California has submitted a formal letter objecting to the bill, estimating that the measure could increase administrative costs by up to $594,000 annually?money which would come out of the cash-strapped state's General Fund. The university has also expressed concern that its researchers would suffer competitive losses in obtaining research grants.

Advocates for genetic privacy are not entirely sympathetic.

"If researchers are worried about not being able to do research with inadequate consent, then maybe they should be worried," says Jeremy Gruber, president of the Council for Responsible Genetics based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which supports the bill.? "Nothing in this bill prevents anybody from doing research, it simply adds a level of consent," Gruber says.

Segal says that University of California policies governing human research already require informed consent for research using genomic data and typically require genetic information to be identified with numbers instead of subjects' names. But the new bill would require authorization for re-use of even anonymous data.

"My intent is not to impede research; my intent is to protect consumers," says Padilla. He notes that some research subjects may not want their data stored and re-used in other experiments. "That's one of the gaps we're trying to close," he says.

Constructive feedback

Many states do not have laws governing surreptitious genetic testing, and those that do vary widely in their restrictions, according to a 2009 report by the Genetics and Public Policy Center. In 2006, Minnesota passed a law that requires written consent for collection, storage, use, and sharing of genetic information. In the November 2011 decision of?Bearder?v. State of Minnesota, the Minnesota Supreme Court found the state's own department of health in violation of the law for keeping blood samples routinely used to screen newborns for serious illnesses and, in some cases, using the samples to validate new genetic tests.

Drogba scores winner against Bayern Munich after equalizing match in 88th minute

Image: Drogba scoresGetty Images

Didier Drogba of Chelsea celebrates after scoring the winning penalty kick to win the Champions League title.

updated 8:54 p.m. ET May 19, 2012

MUNICH - Didier Drogba tied the match with a header in the 88th minute, and then scored the decisive goal in the shootout as Chelsea beat Bayern Munich to win the Champions League final, 4-3 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw Saturday.

The unlikely storyline of an English team beating a German team on penalties in a high-profile match provided a fitting end to a dramatic night, as Chelsea became Europe's champion club for the first time.

The often theatrical 34-year-old Drogba, playing possibly his last game for the club as his Chelsea contract expires next month, was at the heart of the show.

Drogba sent goalkeeper Manuel Neuer the wrong way on the final kick of the shootout in front of massed Bayern fans in their home Allianz Arena. Bayern's Bastian Schweinsteiger missed the previous penalty, hitting the goalpost.

"It was written, I think, a long time ago," Drogba said to British broadcaster ITV of Chelsea's turnaround since its turmoil in March. "This team is amazing. They never give up until the end."

The shootout was needed after Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech saved Arjen Robben's spot-kick early in extra time.

It was awarded for a foul by Drogba, who earned Chelsea an unlikely reprieve.

After 83 minutes of Bayern domination, Thomas Mueller broke dogged Chelsea resistance with a header past the outstanding Cech.

Chelsea's first Champions League title came four years after losing in a shootout to Manchester United.

Drogba succeeded where his captain John Terry, who was suspended for Saturday's finale, failed in missing the fifth penalty in Moscow four years ago which would have given the club's Russian owner Roman Abramavich the Champions League title he has craved.

Abramovich must now make a fascinating decision on the future of interim coach Roberto di Matteo, who took over from the fired Andre Villas-Boas after a last-16, first-leg defeat to Napoli, and inspired a team which then appeared sulky and fading.

Victory also sealed Chelsea's last remaining route into next season's competition which is crucial to its elite status and finances.

Everything seemed stacked against Chelsea when Bayern won the toss to send the shootout to the home, south end of its stadium.

After Bayern captain Philipp Lahm scored first, Juan Mata has his kick saved by Neuer.

Cech then saved Ivica Olic's fourth penalty for Bayern to put the otherwise excellent Schweinsteiger in the spotlight.

He struck the post to Cech's left and covered his face with his shirt.

Drogba stepped up and sealed victory and awaited the adulation of his onrushing teammates.

"He's a hero. Without him we're not here," said Lampard, who scored with Chelsea's third penalty. "I'd love him to stay. What he did tonight he's been doing all his career."

With seven starters from the two teams suspended, Bayern settled quickly against a visiting team set up to absorb pressure.

The Germans' tempo was often dictated by Schweinsteiger, who excelled after collecting a needless yellow card in the second minute for handball.

Toni Kroos, Mario Gomez and Robben all failed to find the target, and anxiety rose in the Chelsea defense when Jose Bosingwa's miscue conceded a corner.

Robben, the former Chelsea winger, threatened again in the 21st when he wriggled through a tiny gap to create a left-footed shooting chance. So often Chelsea's Champions League savior, Cech blocked with his right leg and deflected the ball high up against his right post.

Drogba was being kept quiet before he linked with Frank Lampard to create Chelsea's first good chance in the 37th. Salomon Kalou was teed up to shoot low but Neuer's save was solid.

Gomez, with 13 goals in the competition this season, then wasted two good chances to draw level with Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

First, his control failed when Ribery's misdirected shot flew to his feet, then the big forward wrong-footed Gary Cahill but shot high and wide.

Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes stomped back to the bench throwing his hands in the air.

The second half resumed with the same pattern, and Cole's outstanding defending denied Robben.

The England left-back hunted down Robben's break, then blocked the Dutchman's clear sight of goal from 10 yards (meters) in the 54th. The loose ball found Ribery in an offside position before he thought he'd opened the scoring.

Cole repeated his heroics five minutes later, dashing across to block Robben's shot from 15 yards.

In the 76th, Cech stretched to tip the ball over the bar as Ribery's cross at the goal line squirted up from Cole's lunging challenge.

Cole was then booked for fouling Mueller, who responded by directing a header which Cech gathered.

One minute later, Mueller eluded Cole with a late run and headed home to spark delirious celebrations among the Bayern players and fans.

They underestimated Chelsea's admirable resolve, and Drogba soared to score with a header that Neuer couldn't keep out.

Drogba's taste for the dramatic flared up in the third minute of extra time, as he clipped Ribery's heels in the penalty area.

Referee Pedro Proenca's decision to point to the spot seemed to stun the Bayern fans, and their anxiety was well founded.

Robben fired low to Cech's left, and the Czech `keeper blocked with his arm and body, then reached across to collect the loose ball.

Bayern came agonizingly close in the 108th, when substitute Olic slipped the ball across the goalmouth but teammate Daniel van Buyten failed to anticipate the simple tap-in.
