2012 College Football expert predictions

It?s finally here. College Football!!!!!! The marquee matchup tonight is South Carolina at Vandy, but there are a handful of other games tomorrow. Tomorrow night we get Boise St. versus Michigan State, then on Saturday there?s a full slate of College Football.

What would a football season be without TVF sharing our predictions (as ridiculous as they may be). With the season kickoff just a few hours away, the esteemed writers here at TVF have made our picks. Some of our predictions will come to fruition, most of them will not. Some of them will garner laughter. We?ll just have to watch the games and see what happens. And without further ado, here are the picks that will surely all be wrong by Halloween.

The ACC has several picks for FSU, Va Tech, and Clemson. Pretty standard predictions by any means. The real question is whether or not FSU is truly back on a national level. I say yes, having them reach the BCS Title Game (come on, that schedule is a joke). Everyone else disagrees.

The Big 10, much like the ACC, has picks scattered. Michigan State, Michigan, and Wisconsin all garnered multiple votes. And for some reason, Nebraska earned one vote (really, cbh?). Almost everyone went with the favored Sooners in the Big 12, but give extra credit to Hawkeye and JP for their completely random picks. Pac 12 and SEC picks are as close to unanimous as the group got, heavily favoring USC and Alabama. Those two teams are also picked by most of us to reach the BCS Title game. It?s worthy to note that I?m the only writer who picked a school other than USC, Bama, or LSU to win the title. Maybe I?m just that dumb.

The fun predictions! Barkley?s the heavy favorite for the Heisman. No shock there. But patphish should be heavily criticized for picking a top 10 team as ?surprisingly good.? Georgia is the popular pick to suck this season, getting 3 picks. However, I question if that?s truly a surprise. Georgia screams mediocrity, pretty much every year. Zynga Loses Two More Top-Level Gaming Employees - Tricia ...

Zynga Vice Presidents Bill Mooney and Brian Birtwistle have left the company, representing two of the latest high-level managers to leave.

Bloomberg first reported the exits, but did not know where they were headed.

Zynga declined to confirm the departures, but offered a lengthy statement regarding the company?s low attrition rate, saying ?it?s not at all surprising that some would move on and or retire post-IPO.?

However, it?s hard to ignore the exits as they begin to stack up just nine months after going public.

I started hearing weeks ago that competitors had started to see a flood of resumes?from the social game maker as the stock has tanked. According to LinkedIn, Birtwistle was at the company for slightly less than two years, serving as VP of marketing. Bill Mooney, who was at the company for four and a half years, listed himself as being a studio VP at Zynga?s Game Network most recently.

Two days ago, Mike Verdu, the company?s chief creative officer, announced he was leaving to start his own mobile game company, which Zynga was backing.

Other recent employees to leave include:?Chief Operating Officer John Schappert;?Alan Patmore, general manager of CityVille, who left to work at Kixeye; Erik Bethke, a general manager who oversaw Mafia Wars 2; Ya-Bing Chu, a VP in Zynga?s mobile division; and Jeremy Strauser, a general manager.

Verdu said on Tuesday that his exit is bad timing.

?I personally don?t want to add to the noise level,? he said. ?I think this will be a good thing for me and for Zynga. ? I?m concerned about how this might be viewed with what else is going on, but it?s not a function of anything else going on at the company.?

In a statement, Zynga spokeswoman Dani Dudeck, said: ?Zynga?s voluntary attrition rate was around 1 percent for the first four years, and our current attrition levels are not only below what we expected and modeled in our post-IPO planning, they continue to stay well below the industry average. Developing great leaders is an essential part of Zynga?s core values ? we?re proud of our record in that regard ? and it?s not at all surprising that some would move on and or retire post-IPO. Zynga continues to lead the industry with the top talent in social game development. We?re proud of the teams working hard to create the next generation of social games including the recent launches of The Ville, ChefVille and the coming launch of FarmVille 2.?

Some of the employees have seemingly innocent reasons to leave the company, like Verdu, but the number of people leaving won?t help the company?s stock price.

Shares are down 2.3 percent, or 7 cents, to $2.89, which is right above the company?s all-time low of $2.66 a share.

Your characters specific stats will be in accordance with their starting class. The absolute highest HP that a starting unit can have which is not a Laguz character is going to be between 18-23. If you're a fighter, you start with 23, and if you're a mage or any other magic/staff wielder you start with 18. Everything in between, save for Dracoknights start at 19. Dracoknights start with 21.

When it comes to the other stats, no stats above 8 points will be tolerated and you will be expected to collaborate with me to find your character's starting stats. They will be fair and in accordance with the rules as well as taking in your character's specific personality, fighting style and their class growth rates. Your character's specific rates may change depending on how you write your profile, so don't feel like you're limited to what is listed, but always remember to contact me and figure things out first.

Mississippi State Football: Report Alleges NCAA Investigation Involves a Car

News broke Thursday that the NCAA was investigating "recruiting irregularities" at Mississippi State after ESPN.com's Joe Schad tweeted that the resignation of former Bulldog wide receivers coach Angelo Mirando stems from an ongoing investigation.

Now, we may know what that irregularity is.

According to Matt Stevens of the Columbus (Miss.) Dispatch, part of the investigation revolves around a Ford Mustang purchased for current Bulldog defensive back Will Redmond shortly before he signed with Mississippi State.

That would certainly qualify as an irregularity.

Mississippi State and the NCAA have both confirmed the existence of the investigation and that the university is working in cooperation with the NCAA. That didn't stop Bulldog head coach Dan Mullen from questioning the report, according to the Dispatch.

"I would try to get a little more reliable source than Joe Schad," Mullen said. "I'm supposed to be coaching at State College, I guess, right now, too, according to Joe Schad last year. Wasn't that the case?"

According to the report, the automobile was purchased in Redmond's hometown of Memphis, Tenn., a city that has been the subject of some concern lately.

Auburn signee and Memphis native Jovon Robinson was ruled as a non-qualifier by the NCAA after Kyle Veazey of the Memphis Commercial Appeal?revealed that a guidance counselor falsified his transcript.?Veazey also reported that the city of Memphis is on the NCAA's radar.

Veazey reports that the NCAA has spoken to Byron De'Vinner, the 7-on-7 coach for Redmond and Robinson.?De'Vinner plans on clearing his name and clearing the air regarding the investigation, according to Stevens:

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms in children manifest themselves in behavioural issues such as lack of concentration, hyperactivity, distractibility, and impulsiveness. The difficulty arises in trying to identify what are symptoms of ADHD and what is the typical behaviour of a young child or infant. How can you really tell if your child has ADHD?

ADHD SYMPTOMS

Any symptoms of ADHD would normally be noticeable within the first seven years of a child?s life. The main ADHD symptoms include:

- A tendency to be aggressive.

- Constant fidgeting and being unable to sit still.

- Excessive talking, impatience and constant interrupting ? usually spoken in a loud voice.

- Unable to stay seated, stand in a line or wait their turn.

- Issues with delaying responses.

- Unable to play quietly ? usually running, climbing and charging around.

Upon first glance, the list aboveis likely to appear to be a bit confusing. Afterall, what child does not do at least one of these things on a daily basis.

Unfortunately there are no set rules, meaning ADHD is not usually diagnosed quickly or easily. If your child demonstrates ADHD symptoms occasionally and in specific situations, then it is likely you have nothing to worry about. However if your child shows these symptoms on a regular basis, no matter what the situation or environment, then further investigation may be required.

A COMMON MYTH OF ADHD

Probably as a consequence of the name, if asked to describe a child with ADHD, most people would give a description of a manic child, charging around the place smashing anything and everything. Whilst this isn?t uncommon it is only one manifestation as children?s behaviour can vary greatly. For some children the condition can actually make them very quiet and withdrawn.

The three primary indicators of ADHD are inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness, meaning the outward behaviour of the child of the child is dictated by the most prominent indicators. For example, you may have one child who is inattentive but neither hyperactive nor impulsive, whilst another could be all three (most common).

The unfortunate thing for any children who do not display hyperactive or impulsive tendencies is that they often get missed. The fact that they are not constantly ?acting up? means they get over-looked, though their need for attention is no less. Children such as these who struggle to pay attention will pay the consequence both academically and socially if they are not diagnosed soon enough.

CONCLUSION

It is often difficult to differentiate symptoms of ADHD with normal child mis-behaviour. Diagnosis does not often happen quickly and usually requires observation over time, to assess the circumstances and environment of any concerning behaviour.

Remember that children with ADHD are not necessarily hyperactive or ?wild?, the condition can also be present in quieter children. If you start having concerns then keep a journal. Not only will this give you a good idea of whether or not you have something to worry about, it will also be useful for future consultation with a professional.

If you are concerned that your child may have ADHD then the first person you should speak to is their teacher. As all three of the primary indicators impact on learning, teachers are usually the first to notice if anything is untoward.

Louise Jones McKinney, a respected leader of Seattle's African-American community, passed away Wednesday, according to an announcment from the church where her husband served as pastor for more than 40 years.

McKinney, former First Lady of Mount Zion Baptist Church, turned 82 last month and continued to worship regularly with her husband, Pastor Emeritus Rev. Dr. Samuel B. McKinney.

"Now that she is no longer with us, we celebrate her legacy and have an obligation to work diligently to make sure that her commitment to education continues to be at the heart of our mission as a church," said the church's senior pastor, Rev. Aaron Williams.

The wake will be held Thursday, August 30 at 7:00 p.m. at Seattle Town Hall (1119 8th Ave.). The memorial service? will be held on Friday, August 31 at 11:00 a.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church (1634 19th Ave. in Seattle).

In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to the Mount Zion Baptist Church Scholarship Ministry in honor of Louise Jones McKinney.

FORK UNION ??The legend began to branch out and branch out quickly. A pair of track shoes barely touched a strip of turf for a few blinks of the eye and it was like a wild fire mixed with a game of telephone.

?It spread everywhere,? said Fork Union receiver Austin Stone . ?There was somebody who was at the camp and he?s really into UVa. He went there and then he heard about it, and then he heard that he?s coming to Fork Union. And then he called my dad and my dad told me.

?I was just like, ?Wow!??

Dashing onto the scene

Prior to July 21, Malcolm Cook had never Googled his own name. He was a talented football player who spent three years at Armstrong High School in Richmond performing every task sans team bus operator. He ran, he threw, he tackled, he returned kicks, he picked off passes. And it was all for a squad that managed one win in 2011, three in 2010 and one in 2009.

Cook had the raw ability and makeup to garner big-time recruiting attention, but it wasn?t easy playing for a team routinely on the wrong end of lopsided results.

?Tough isn?t the word,? Cook said. ?It was hard. I tried to play my game, but it was hard when you?re losing like 63-14, 72-12 and you?re the only person scoring and you?re getting banged up. And you get on the bus and they?re still laughing.?

Those times made Cook return to a four-word phrase authored by many, but repeated by his mother.

?She used to always tell me, ?Your time will come,?? he said.

On a steamy summer afternoon in Charlottesville, the moment arrived. It was July 21, Virginia?s final one-day camp for rising high school juniors and seniors.

Cavalier defensive coordinator Jim Reid, who had kept Cook on his recruiting radar since he was a sophomore, was present. As was head coach Mike London.

Cook?s show-off period was to come in the 40-yard dash. This was where he could flash his natural skill.

He was prepared.

?I had track shoes and I was ready,? he said. ?I had come another year and had a disappointing 40 in which I slipped. I had punished myself that whole year. I was telling Coach Reid, ?This year I?m going to have a better 40.??

A deep breath and a quick burst later, he was right.

?I knew I had a good time once Coach Reid said, ?Now, that?s how you run,?? he said.

Cook blitzed in at a reported 4.40 seconds.

?A coach looked at me and held up two fours, and I was like, ?Yes! I knew I had it!?

First came the eye-popping 40, then came the offer.

?Coach Reid pulled me to the side and was talking to me and everything,? Cook said. ?He said, ?I told you your time would come.? And then Coach London was over there and was like, ?We?re going to offer you a full scholarship.??

And like that, Cook, a 6-foot-1, 196-pound safety, became Virginia?s 16th commitment for the 2013 class.

The Internet was buzzing. Calls, texts and tweets were being made.

Cook could Google himself now.

?Somebody called me and said, ?Malcolm, you know you?re ranked 22nd in the nation at safety??? Cook said. ?And I?m like, ?Huh? Don?t you call me lying like that.? And then I searched my name for the first time and I was like, ?Wow!?

?My overall ranking was 89 and I was 26th in the country at safety, and I was 17th in the state, overall.

?I think I really kind of took off.?

The next step

Cook sat at a square table across from a reporter in a gathering area outside a large gym. Patiently waiting his turn was a quarterback headed to Penn State. A future Eastern Michigan receiver had already interviewed.

Enclosed in a glass case to Cook?s right were shelves full of busts honoring legends of the program, among them Eddie George and Vinny Testaverde.

This is Cook?s home now. His pre-UVa stomping grounds rest some 30 miles south of Charlottesville.

For the 2012 season, he?s teaming up with Christian Hackenberg, Austin Stone and company at Fork Union Military Academy.

?This is going to do a lot to raise my level,? Cook said. ?I?ve never been around people who want it like I want it. Now I have people that want it like I want it.?

FUMA?s goal is to conquer a state championship. That?ll start Saturday when it takes on Hermitage as part of a nationally televised doubleheader at Oscar Smith High School.

?I want to win,? Cook said. ?Christian kept yelling about a ring and I saw one on the wall downstairs and I was like, ?God, I want one of those. I have to have one.?

?Every day we?re pushing to get that ring before I leave here.?

But there?s individual missions as well. FUMA coach Micky Sullivan is constantly fine-tuning Cook?s game to prepare it for life in the ACC.

?The guy makes you better coming off the bus just because of his athleticism,? Sullivan said. ?But his fundamentals aren?t real good. I hope I can say this, being in our program for a year is going to make him more fundamentally sound when he goes to Virginia than what he would have been if he hadn?t been here.

?He?s going to be a great athlete. He?s just got to learn. Little things like flipping your hips and how to drop your hips and come out of a break, things that you go over and over again.?

Pairing with an Elite 11 signal caller doesn?t hurt either. The 6-5, 220-pound Hackenberg sought Cook out after he performed at a Fork Union combine last year.

The two clicked during a camp trip to Penn State this summer and have returned to FUMA as roommates.

?Malcolm and I developed a relationship,? Hackenberg said. ?Being roommates, I look at him like a brother. He looks at me the same way. He?s a great player. A great add for this team. A great add for UVa. I wish he would have waited a little while for Penn State, but we?ll see where everything goes.

?He?s a great friend of mine. We?re sort of looking forward to this season.?

With his tremendous speed and developing ball skills, Cook might strike some fear into Hackenberg.

Could the Division I safety highlight a FUMA practice by picking off the Division I quarterback?

?It hasn?t happened yet,? the future Nittany Lion said with a laugh. ?He only talks about it.?

Man, 70, survives 6 days stuck in Alpine crevasse

MAINZ, Germany -- A 70-year old German man was rescued Tuesday from the Austrian Alps, where he was stuck for six days in a crevasse nearly 10,000-feet above sea level.

The man, who was not named, survived by eating rations of a chocolate bar and drinking melted glacier water, officials said.

Medical officials expressed surprise that he had survived for so long in such icy conditions.

"One of the treating physicians told us that one of the first things the 70-year-old asked for was a beer with a shot of lemonade," said Johannes?Schwamberger, spokesman for the hospital in Innsbruck, Austria, where the man was being treated after his rescue.

Climbing alone
The man, who hailed from the southeast German state of Bavaria, had been touring by himself Schrankogel mountain in the central eastern Alpine region of Stubai without the safety of a rope.

"It's a wonder he survived for so long," Gerhard Baumann, from the Austrian mountain rescue team, told NBC News.

"Climbers are always being told not to hike the mountains alone, to be in regular contact with relatives or friends and to be roped at all times, especially on a glacier," Baumann explained.

'Cold was his biggest enemy'
Rescuers pulled the man out of the crevasse after other climbers had heard his screaming.

"Because the man had no serious injuries, it was not so difficult to pull him out of the crevasse," Baumann said.

"The man had fallen between 10 and 15 meters (32-50 feet) into the crevasse and was resting on a ledge -- the cold was his biggest enemy," Baumann added.

The man was airlifted to a hospital in Innsbruck, where he is recovering from his ordeal in the intensive care unit. Hospital officials told NBC News that the man has no life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition.

Brain scans don't lie about age

ScienceDaily (Aug. 16, 2012) ? It isn't uncommon for people to pass for ages much older or younger than their years, but researchers have now found that this feature doesn't apply to our brains. The findings reported online on August 16 in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, show that sophisticated brain scans can be used to accurately predict age, give or take a year.

It's a "carnival trick" that may have deeper implications for both brain science and medicine.

"We have uncovered a 'developmental clock' of sorts within the brain -- a biological signature of maturation that captures age differences quite well, regardless of other kinds of differences that exist across individuals," says Timothy Brown of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

Together with UCSD's Anders Dale and Terry Jernigan and researchers from nine other universities, Brown used structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to scan the brains of 885 people ranging in age from 3 to 20. Those brain scans were used to identify 231 biomarkers of brain anatomy that, when combined, could assess an individual's age with more than 92 percent accuracy. That's beyond what's been possible with any other biological measure, the researchers say.

While others had looked at some of the same brain biomarkers in the past one by one, the key was finding a way to combine them to capture the multidimensional nature of brain anatomy and characteristic patterns of developmental change with age. Brown says that they are excited to further explore the new approach and its potential for use in the clinic.

"The fact that we found a collection of brain measures that so accurately captures a person's chronological age means that brain development, or at least certain anatomical aspects of it, is more tightly controlled than we knew previously," Brown says. "The regularity in this maturity metric among typically developing children suggests that it might be sensitive to detecting abnormality as well."

It's not yet clear how these anatomical changes in the brain will relate to maturity in terms of human behavior, which we all know isn't necessarily reflected by our chronological age.

"The anatomy and physiology of these dynamic, interacting neural systems, which we can probe in different ways with MRI scans, have to account for the changes we all observe in human psychological development," Brown says. "We're still figuring out exactly how."
