Christie: Wednesday debate ?the restart? of Romney campaign

Christie speaks at the Republican National Convention in Tampa. (J. Scott Applewhite/AP)

While both Democrats and Republicans have downplayed the importance of the first presidential debate in recent days, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie raised the stakes on Sunday, predicting this week's duel in Denver will be a game changer for Mitt Romney.

"Wednesday night's the restart of this campaign," Christie told David Gregory on NBC's "Meet The Press." "Come Thursday morning, the entire narrative of this race is going to change."

Christie dismissed the recent polls that have President Obama leading Romney in nine battleground states.

"You saw the change in those polls happen very quickly," Christie said. "And I'm here to tell you this morning, it can happen very quickly back the other way. And I think the beginning of that is Wednesday night when Governor Romney for the first time gets on the same stage with the president of the United States and people can make a direct comparison about them and their visions for the future.

"You're going to have tens of millions of people for the very first time, David, really tuning in and paying attention to this race," he continued. "And also, for the first time, you're going to have them be able to make a direct, side-by-side comparison. Remember, at the end of the day, campaigns are about the candidates. And they're going to be able to see these two candidates next to each other, debating each other. And Governor Romney I know is going to do a great job on Wednesday night laying out his vision for America's future and making the contrast between he and the president of the United States."

Christie also dismissed criticism of Romney--who he referred to as "the future of this party"--from fellow Republicans.

"Folks like us obsess about this stuff," Christie said. "But I've got to tell you something: The general public that I speak to in New Jersey and elsewhere are just beginning to really tune into this race. And so they're going to start tuning in on Wednesday night, and when they do, Governor Romney's lay out his vision for a better and greater America, for greater opportunity for all of our citizens. And I think that's when you're going to see this race really start to tighten and then move in Governor Romney's direction."

President Obama, Gov. Christie said, is "just trying to run out the clock" in the race for the White House.

"He desperately wants to run out the clock with platitudes which sound nice, and I give him that," Christie said. "The president's very good at that. But in the end, I think that both sides have to look at this campaign and say, 'What are we going to lay out over the next 36 days?' And that's I think what's really important. And I think Governor Romney will lay out some very important points over the next 36 days that are going to make people believe once and for all that America can be great again, not just staggering along here economically as we've been doing."

Spain debt rises on aid to banks, regions, finance cost

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's debt levels are set to rise next year, piling pressure on the government to apply for aid as it pours funds in to cash-strapped regions, an ailing banking system and rising refinancing costs, its budget showed on Saturday.

Spain's debt as a ratio of gross domestic product will reach 90.5 percent by end 2013, according to the document presented to parliament for approval, almost three times that registered before the property bubble burst in 2008.

The budget aims to make savings of around 13 billion euros ($16.7 billion) next year, largely by deepening already unpopular cuts in public sector wages, education, health and social services, fuelling anti-austerity protests.

"This is an austerity budget, but will serve to help us get over this long economic crisis and once again show that Spain is a trustworthy partner within Europe," Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro told journalists after delivering the budget.

Spain is at the center of the euro zone debt crisis as nervous investors demand ever higher premiums to hold Spanish debt on concerns the government cannot control its finances in the midst of a deepening recession.

Calls by wealthy northeastern region Catalonia for independence and the rising number of demonstrations on the streets of major cities have stoked doubts Spain can fix its problems without help.

Thousands of protesters gathered on Saturday in Madrid's Neptune plaza, between the Prado Museum and Parliament, for a third time this week to vent anger at politicians they accuse of pillaging the welfare state to bail out badly-run banks.

"This has to change. We have to show them we are not an anti-system minority but represent Spain's discontent and we are many. You only have to see the unemployment rate to see that," said state school teacher, Montse, 44, who was at the march with her unemployed husband and 11-year-old daughter.

Unemployment in Spain is more than double the European Union average, with half of all working-age under-26s unable to find jobs and shattered businesses laying off employees they cannot afford to pay.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has delayed any plea for aid, which would kick-start a European Central Bank plan to buy debt and ease financing costs, though this week has passed reforms and the budget plan in what many see is an effort to pre-empt the likely terms of a bailout.

Rajoy, who said he is considering the conditions behind any aid request, is widely expected to wait until after regional elections in Galicia and the Basque Country before taking any decision.

RISING BORROWING NEEDS

The budget details spending cuts of 3.1 percent in health, 14.4 percent in education and 6.3 percent in unemployment benefits, as the recession, which began in the first quarter, drags on.

Spain will also slash state funding to commerce, tourism and small, and medium-sized companies by 18.8 percent and infrastructure by 13.5 percent.

The government will increase its reliance on international markets for funding next year, with gross debt issuance requirements of 207.2 billion euros, after budgeting in 2012 for gross issuance of 186.1 billion euros.

The cost of financing its debt, as benchmark 10-year bond yields rise to near unsustainable levels of above 6 percent, is expected to increase to 38.6 billion euros, or 3.6 percent of GDP, in 2013, the budget showed.

The Treasury must pay debt redemptions of 159.2 billion euros in 2013, up slightly from 153.2 billion euros in 2012.

The increase in the debt-to-GDP ratio was due the economic crisis and the effect of state instruments on public accounts, the Treasury said in the document.

The instruments include the power deficit bond programme, FADE, the service provider fund for regional governments, Spain's part in aid granted to Ireland, Greece and Portugal and the recapitalization loan for the country's banks, it said.

Brussels on Thursday said the budget was a large step in the right direction. But many economists expressed doubt Spain's conservatives would be able to raise the cash the budget demanded as pension and debt-servicing costs rise.

"My general view is that this is an optimistic budget, in the sense that predictions for the contraction in 2013 are very optimistic," said Xavier Vives, economist at business school IESE, adding he expected the plans to be revised as with every other budget over the last four years.

The budget is based on the assumption GDP will shrink by 0.5 percent in 2013 year-on-year, though most economists expect a deeper slump.

DEFICIT JUMP

Spain will meet its 2012 public deficit target as dictated by European guidelines, Montoro said, but the shortfall will jump by more than one percentage point if aid to its struggling banks were taken in to account.

The Spanish deficit this year would be 6.3 percent of GDP, not including these payments to its banks, he said, but would rise to 9.4 percent of GDP last year and 7.4 percent of GDP this year if the aid was considered.

"Everything within the deficit derived from financial operations aren't included ... they're considered one-offs," Montoro said.

Spain has asked for up to 100 billion euros for its crisis-hit banks, though the debate among Spain's European partners rages over whether that money would go directly to its lenders or first via public coffers.

On Friday, an independent report showed Spanish banks will need up to 59.3 billion euros in extra capital to ride out the economic downturn.

The budget details on Saturday showed Spain's debt ratio included 30 billion euros of the planned 100-billion-euro aid request for the country's banks.

make money online: Are you curious about Being an Internet ...

There are some great advantages to being in Internet network marketer. It's easy to get free leads on-demand, you can make product sales daily, and you get downline sign-ups. There are some giant challenges involved.

Even before starting searching for a product there are a bunch of things that you have got to know before you can become a successful Internet network marketer.

The truth of it really is you're in the business to make sales. If you do not know anything about how to sell or the psychology of selling then there is a mass of info that you ought to be conscious of first. The words "sales" and "buying" are massive no-no's nowadays but you have to learn about them anyway, and learn to master the techniques behind selling before you can most likely become a successful Internet marketer.

Sales are a part of selling and selling is surely the name of the game nowadays. That's a fact.

In order to learn how to sell to people you have got to understand the psychology behind selling. You've got to leave your purchaser feeling satisfied and confident he has made the correct decision, and that he got precisely what he wanted. As an Internet marketer you'll have to use your abilities to make an attention grabbing series of videos or an internet site that stands proud, with offers the prospect may not be ready to resist.

People truly do not like to be sold to. All through the buying process they prefer to think they are in control. Many sales are made through impulse or for emotional reasons ; when they have committed to buy they'll go through a method of justifying their purchase to themselves. Being in sales suggests that you've got to lead these folk gently by the hand and assist them in making a decision.

Selling Methods behind the successful Internet Network marketer

Part of the psychology of selling is offering folks what are known as "decoy" offers. If as an example you are pushing cosmetics, shall we say starting point for sake of discussion. If you were offer one bottle of the foundation at a hefty price folk will know it is not a very good deal, but if you offer a buy one get 2 free offer at a touch higher price then she's going to be interested, she will see that it is a far better deal and purchase all three bottles of foundation.

Clients have a hard time making their minds up, so you must not offer too many choices, different colors being a good example, if people get baffled by too many selections they may simply depart without purchasing anything. The most noteworthy Internet network marketers will offer up to three options or choices. And this is applicable to anything concerning prospects enrolling for your opportunity. Attempt to make the best priced package deal the most interesting for your new team members, but don't offer more than three choices.

If someone does not want something they'll say no and they will continue to say no, your job is to make them say yes. See what their challenges are. What is it they detest the size, the brand, the name, or the price? If you might remove the thing they object to, then they are going to stop saying no thank you.

That old saying that you get what you pay for pricing. If you have priced your product way lower than your competitor's product people are going to think there's something's wrong with it, low prices are fairly often compared with low-quality, so don't price anything too reasonably.

Give folks the idea that they are special and you do not just sell your products to any Tom Dick or Harry. When folks are told they can't have something, like kids, they're going to try even tougher to get it it's very often the item that has sold sign on it. You can turn this peculiar psychology the wrong way up to your advantage.

Limited offers and scarceness are another one look at Xmas toys for youngsters there's always one each year that people fight over, although the company possibly made 10,000,000 of them! As in the example above, the kid wants what he can't have and mum and dad will pay thru the nose for it solely to keep him quiet. So pronouncing that there's a small amount of your product will mean that people will get it immediately for fear of losing out.

Use caution how you work these restricted time offers, don't say that something is only available till the final day of the month and then continue offering the product through the month after next. Folks will become suspicious and think that it was a fraudulent offer or something was wrong with the product.

These are several things that you should do not forget if you would like to be successful at internet network promoting. Of course, in network marketing the key to your success will be massive lead generation. You will need a steady stream of new prospects in order to promote your products and opportunity. Without leads you don't have a business.

The most successful Internet network marketer will spend most of his time building a downline, and generating traffic and highly qualified leads.

World hockey chief expects NHL players in Sochi

TOKYO (AP) ? The International Ice Hockey Federation is operating on the assumption that NHL players will take part in the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

"We've prepared everything with the idea that NHL players will be there," IIHF President Rene Fasel said Friday. "We've decided about the format and expect them to be there."

Fasel was re-elected to another four-year term as president at the IIHF's general congress in Tokyo.

Just 16 months before the 2014 Sochi Games, NHL players are not certain to compete in the two-week tournament in Russia run by the IIHF. Fasel said the tournament will start a day later than the 2010 games in Vancouver.

"We decided to start on Wednesday instead of Tuesday," Fasel said. "In Vancouver, we started on Tuesday but the players will need more time to travel to Russia. It will mean less rest between games but we have to start on Wednesday."

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has said no decision is imminent about possibly shutting down for two weeks to accommodate an Olympics in which some games would be played in the middle of the night in North America, thus affecting TV viewership and interest.

Before the NHL makes up its mind, a collective bargaining agreement between owners and players must be negotiated. The NHL locked out its players on Sept. 16 when talks broke down. The two sides plan to meet again Friday.

Russian player Alex Ovechkin, one of the NHL's signature stars, is threatening to play in Sochi no matter what the NHL does.

Fasel said the NHL could decide as late as January not to come but the tournament will go ahead.

"We'll play the tournament anyway," Fasel said. "There are not only 750 NHL players playing hockey in the world."

95% The Queen of Versailles

All Critics (96) | Top Critics (28) | Fresh (91) | Rotten (5)

Seriously, if this was the American Dream, couldn't we have come up with something better?

"The Queen of Versailles" is funny, sad, infuriating, instructive. It's the American Dream inflated to ridiculous extremes, until it bursts.

More than a social morality tale, this is a character study, with the title well chosen.

"The Queen of Versailles" ought to be required viewing for anyone who blames the rich for yanking the rug out from under America's economy.

By the end, the movie has pulled off a small miracle: You become absorbed in the lives of these people for who they are and not what they own.

What I left with was not hatred. I disapprove of the values they represent, but I also find them fascinating and just slightly lovable.

Documentaries are rarely as hilarious as this one. Well, the first half of it at least

Filmmaker Greenfield has a wonderful eye for the absurd, finding moments of offbeat humanity all the way through this involving documentary

[E]nds up an ever less slightly ungenerous look at the .01 percent than it might have been... But this is still a brutal film from many angles.

One of the great unsayable truths about the American dream is that it is a bit of a Ponzi scheme ... our system admits a glimmer of hope that anyone, no matter how lowborn, can rise to the top.

Extremely funny and revealing ...

[Siegel] is now suing Greenfield for "misrepresentation". Well, I know whose side I'm on.

She epitomises a Western culture struggling to wean itself off debt.

Greenfield's film is bathed in Florida sunshine, adding to the sensation that we're watching Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous with a Marxist punchline.

Never has grotesque wealth looked so unenviable, or its removal been so entertaining, as in this garishly watchable riches-to-rags documentary ...

[Siegel] ultimately emerges as someone who belongs more in The Little House on the Prairie: ever cheerful, and triumphantly unimpeachable.

The temptation to be moralistic must have been overpowering, yet Greenfield finally manages to summon sympathy for people who at first seem vain, selfish and greedy.

Prepare to be shocked, disgusted and compelled.

In the end, these are human beings, not emblems - and it is this that makes this documentary one of the most watchable, for rich and poor alike.

A bizarre and mesmerising journey to the heart of Cloud Cuckoo Land.

It is a comedy that aspires to tragedy, and a metaphor for a nation collapsing beneath the incompatible, intolerable pressures of excess and inequity.

For all their garishness, the Siegels are pretty likable, even if attempts to make you sympathetic to their "plight" fall short.

It scores a lot of laughs at the Siegel's bad taste and odd ways of adapting to their newfound misfortune. Thankfully, Greenfield also makes the Siegels sympathetic.

If you get some kind of sick kick watching the mighty take a fall, The Queen of Versailles will be nothing short of a schadenfreudic ball.

US panel approves NC uranium enrichment plant

(AP) ? A nuclear power partnership of General Electric Co. and Tokyo-based Hitachi Ltd. received federal approval Tuesday to build the first plant to enrich uranium for use in commercial reactors using a classified laser technology.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued a license to General Electric-Hitachi Global Laser Enrichment LLC to build and operate a uranium enrichment plant near Wilmington deploying the laser technology instead of costlier centrifuges.

Nuclear weapons control advocates fear that allowing companies to use the cheaper and easier technology could increase the risk it falls into the wrong hands.

"We think the approval of the license was done without due consideration of proliferation," said Edwin Lyman, a senior scientist in the global security program of the Union of Concerned Scientists. "We're already grappling with how to cope with Iran's nuclear enrich capability" and the laser technology "could make the problem intractable and uncontrollable."

GE Hitachi said it hasn't yet decided whether the project will be profitable enough to launch construction of the $1 billion plant. Part of the evaluation will be weighing whether markets for enriched uranium will hold for years into the future, spokesman Christopher White said.

But the company assured its hold on the classified technology proposed by the Australian company Silex Systems is secure.

"The company has worked with the NRC, the U.S. departments of State and Energy and independent non-proliferation experts for several years to ensure the security of this technology and has met ? and in many cases exceeded ? all regulations pertaining to safeguarding this technology," GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy said in a statement.

The NRC license allows GE Hitachi to enrich uranium to 8 percent by weight. Uranium is enriched to 90 percent purity to build atomic bombs.

The United States and five other world powers have imposed sanctions on Iran because it has enriched uranium to 20 percent, a level that could be turned into weapons-grade material much more quickly than power-plant fuel.

The technology could enhance America's energy security because a majority of enriched uranium made to fuel the country's 104 operating nuclear reactors comes from foreign or government-aided sources, the company said.

"It could provide a steady supply of uranium enriched right here in the U.S. to the country's nuclear reactors," Global Laser Enrichment chief executive officer Chris Monetta said. "These reactors provide approximately 20 percent of the nation's electricity today and will continue to be an important part of the energy mix for decades to come."

The NRC said it would conduct inspections during the plant's construction and operation and hold a public meeting in Wilmington before construction begins to explain its oversight plans.

Quinn Does Not Have Brain Cancer and I Am Not Dying ...

Ronan. Quinn does not have brain cancer. Thank you for that. He just suffers from migraines, like your daddy. Brain cancer worries to rest. For now. It was a busy weekend. I spent most of it, hanging out with your brothers. They had a basketball game on Saturday. I felt so proud, watching them. Basketball has become therapeutic to them. Your daddy spends so much time, practicing with them. It?s showing on the court for sure. They are strong, fast, and aggressive. You heard me right. Aggressive. This coming from the two most gentle giants, to walk this earth. As their mama, watching this fire that burns within them on the basketball court, makes me so proud. I know it comes from you. I love watching them play. I hate how my eyes wander over to the other side of the court to where the 5 and 6 year olds are playing. I always picture you out there. You would have been the best player, rocking your Nike headband for sure. I told them after their game, how proud I was. I told them how much you would have loved watching them play and how you would have been yelling and screaming for them. The not having your little squeaky screams around, will always destroy me. Always.

I was tired Saturday, after being out for most of the day. I had a date night with Liam and your daddy took Quinn to the ASU football game. Liam and I cuddled on the couch and watched a movie. It?s still hard for me to sit still and just watch a movie. I did it for Liam. I made him a pizza and popcorn. I may have burnt the pizza, but he didn?t mind. He was just happy to have me cook it for him. On Sunday, we had a nice little treat. Our friends, Robyn and Kyle, flew in for the night. Kyle asked Robyn, if she could go anywhere for one night, where would she want to go? She said to see me. I was over the moon about the two of them, coming to visit. They got in Sunday afternoon and we spent the day just hanging out and lying low. Your daddy and Kyle did a lot of guitar playing and singing. Robyn and I did a lot of trying to find me something to wear for The Gold Party (I still having nothing to wear because I refuse to spend an insane amount of money on a dress!) and talking about you and Ezra. I hate that she gets this in what seems to be the exact same way that I get this; but I love this too. I don?t feel so alone when I am around her. I swear to you, she knows my pain almost exactly. She loved Ezra, that much. She knows her perfect life will never exist again, because her perfect life was when Ezra was here. I know that, too. We feel a lot of the same dark things that I don?t really want to share on here. I can go to the darkest of the dark places with Robyn and not be scared that I am being judged or criticized. She is one of the few people I can do this with and it?s all because cancer killed her fucking kid, too. Fuckwad asshole that cancer is.

I took her on a night hike with Kassie and your brothers. I huffed and puffed all the way up the fucking mountain. Robyn laughed at me and the way I had to have my hands on the side of my hips, so I could keep my balance. It is a lot of work carrying a Poppy in my belly. My inner insane workout goddess is not happy, but what?s a girl to do? I can?t do much, so I continued to huff and puff up to the top of the mountain until we arrived at our church. It was dark, quiet and peaceful. We did our little list of the things we were grateful for. Robyn said lists like that were hard for her. They are always hard for me. I made your brothers do one, too. I told them we couldn?t leave the mountain until it was done. They said some cute things. Things 9 year olds should say. Quinn?s last one was he was grateful for his health. That got to me, in a good way and a sad way. I was proud of him for saying his health but it also made me fucking pissed at the world that I know he only knows this, due to you dying. We got down the mountain, in the dark. I didn?t fall. Yay, me. Poppy wouldn?t have been to pleased about that one. We came home and your daddy and Kyle had cooked us all dinner. We gathered around like the unconventional family we are, but nothing has ever felt so much like family since you?ve been gone. Kyle had your brothers in stitches. Kassie just looked like an angel. Robyn just feels like home. Your daddy makes everything safe. Liam and Quinn, remind me of you. Our kitchen table was filled with laugher, pain, sadness, and beauty? all in a very safe, yet dark world that we exist in. I have decided I don?t really feel like I live anymore, Ronan. I exist if anything. I can get by, existing and working the rest of my life to exist in a really, really, really good way. By helping others and opening my heart to these beautiful people, that I am so lucky to know. So lucky for being so unlucky. Talk about ironic.

Robyn and Kyle left today. I was sad to see them go but so glad that they came. My phone rang from my OBGY?s office. I didn?t pick up, on purpose. I had blood work done there last week. I knew they were calling to tell me I had some deadly disease or that Poppy is dying. I listened to the voicemail and called back. My heart was racing. I waited to talk to someone. I was preparing myself, for the worst like I always do with every situation now. I had the talk in my head with Liam and Quinn about how I was dying or how Poppy could not be born. This is automatically where my mind goes and I?m not proud of it but it is not anything I can control. I think I was about ready to hyperventilate?on the phone when the lady came on to tell me everything came back fine, except my thyroid looked off. ?What do you mean, I?m not dying and Poppy?s not dying!? I wanted to scream. Surely something bigger had to be wrong? Surely the other shoe was going to drop, right?? Not today, Ronan. Not today. Not even today when my very special friend had her very hard surgery. One she thought she might die from. I told her I had talked to you, and she would not be dying. I was right. Everything went great. Thank you for that. You know I could not survive, without her.

I?m going to go now. I?m tired, but what?s new. Seems to be a theme around here. This Poppy pregnancy is for the birds. But I will try to be grateful for this gift that is growing inside of me. I am grateful, Ronan. Don?t get me wrong. I am grateful, but it is a lot harder than I had anticipated. I wasn?t mentally prepared for all the grief that was going to consume me, too. I miss you. I love you. I hope you are safe. Sweet dreams, baby doll.

Computer And Technology: Why Should Your Company Employ ...

The term cloud computing technology is one that gets mentioned a lot in today's business world but is it a technology that is suited to your business and one that you should employ? Cloud computing can be hard to quantify if you are new to the concept and it can be a struggle to get your head around what the term really means. In basic terms cloud computing means that all your computer power is managed through an imaginary space called "the cloud" and that all users within a company have access to this cloud. Through "the cloud" users will be able to access the company's software, applications and data at a shared location. What this means is that a company no longer requires physical storage as the cloud ensures that multiple users can access what they require in a secure open environment.

There are many reasons why companies should look to cloud computing technology and five main reasons which illustrate why you should be considering the technology are as follows.

Firstly, there is the cost saving potential of the technology. Employing cloud computing technology will ensure that computer hardware costs are reduced within an organisation. The more software, applications and data used within a company mean more resources being used. By using a cloud platform you can achieve better economies of scale as you can access a cloud provider's infrastructure which has already been developed for such economies. Also it is like a utility as you only pay for what you use, therefore your company no longer has to buy physical IT assets and make large capital investments.

Secondly, cloud computing gives your company flexibility as it allows your data to be accessed from anywhere and through different devices such as a mobile phone. This allows your company to be flexible as employees can connect to the cloud from anywhere and have access to the same features as if they were in the office.

Thirdly, cloud technology ensures that you have a central and reactive infrastructure. It ensures that data is located in a centralised location ensuring an impressive up-time level that with physical onsite technology is hard to achieve.

Fourthly, the security of the technology is renowned for being of a better standard than the network security measures that companies would have employed in the past. If your company depends on the security of your data and applications then cloud computing will ensure reliability.

Finally, by employing the right cloud computing technology and the right provider management becomes easy for your company. Cloud hosting providers will ensure there is no down-time (many through rigid and competitive SLA's to give your company peace of mind) and ensure that your physical data is organised and secure.

As you can see employing this technology has many advantages. The main advantages are the cost savings, the security and the ability to put the management of the cloud into a providers hands to manage and ensure up-time and standardisation for your company. It is little wonder that companies are harnessing the power of cloud computing and it is only a matter of time before this technology becomes common practice.

If you are interested in cloud computing the next step will be to talk to some experts to ensure that your company is suitable to move to a cloud-based environment. It will be understandable that you will have lots of questions and will want to speak to a company with renowned industry knowledge. The Cloud Computing Centre is a company that can help as they have helped hundreds of companies move into the cloud and can provide you with a fully functional environment to evaluate and check that moving to the cloud is for you.

Working it out with DC Film graduate Aaron Mullins | Boston ...

September 18, 2012

Aaron Mullins is a man on a mission. Currently, his mission is finalizing the? premiere of Hard Fix, a Washington DC based web series he is producing as part of Rubacam Productions, which he created with fellow CDIA alum Tyler Colin Perry.?? Hard Fix is a political thriller set in Capitol Hill, a little something Aaron knows about from having worked eight years on Capitol Hill for two US Senators before graduating from CDIA DC Campus in 2011 with? a certificate in Digital Filmmaking.

We caught up with Aaron in between meetings and editing sessions while he graciously sat still long enough to answer our questions:

Q:?What got you interested in the filmmaking as a career?
A:? I always had an unusual obsession with movies and TV. My family didn't have a television while I was growing up, so I used to seek out friends in the neighborhood who did...guess you could say I was a bit of a Machiavellian kid in that sense. I'd also have to point to my dad's side of the family, who are of Irish decent. My grandfather was a great story teller, my father is a really great story teller, so I think it got passed along in the genes.

Q: How has CDIA helped you to become the filmmaker you are today?
A: When I decided to change careers, I knew that I needed to learn the skills that would enable me to become a filmmaker. I had read a lot, but didn't have the hands on experience.? CDIA was perfect...they put a camera in my hand the first day, and we were shooting / lighting our first scenes in a matter of weeks. All the instructors were currently working in the industry and gave us valuable, real life knowledge / expertise. There's rarely a day that goes by that I don't use some form of filmmaking tool that I learned at CDIA.

Q: How has life been post-CDIA?
A: After graduating, I partnered with a fellow graduate, Tyler Colin Perry, to launch a new entertainment and branding company, Rubacam Productions. In addition to the web series, we are working with several business clients on branding and advertising videos, as well as developing new scripts for TV and the web. Never a dull moment

Q: Tell us about the project you are working on now
A: We're currently producing a new Washington D.C based web series entitled, Hard Fix. It's a political thriller / action story about an Irish pub owner of Capitol Hill who, through a series of events, is hired by the cities political power elites to sweep their dirty laundry under the rug. We're launching the pilot episode by the end of October!

It's really a CDIA family project. We have a core production team of three other CDIA film graduates (Tyler Colin Perry, Dave Campbell and Sean Sonnenberg) as well as? CDIA instructor (Ross Stansfield). In addition, we partnered with several current CDIA film students who worked as crew, as well as current CDIA web design students who created the website www.hard-fix.com In addition, our official photographer is a good friend and CDIA photo alum, Stephanie Bragg.

Q: What advice can you offer someone considering a career in filmmaking?
A:?Well, I guess I'd start off by saying filmmaking of any kind is a marathon, not a race. That's important to understand. It's really a series of problems that need to be solved, so you'll need to stay focused on the end goal, make quick decisions and learn to work with others. Learn to listen and be willing to make mistakes, every day in this business you should be learning something new, sharpening the skill set. On top of that, create every day, watch every movie possible, remain an observer of human nature and be willing to go anywhere to shoot a scene. But when it's all said and done, have fun. It's the greatest job in the world if you're willing to work hard and trust in a bit of luck!

Antibiotic use aids MRSA spread in hospital and infection control measures do little to prevent it, says hospital study

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? The use of a commonly prescribed antibiotic is a major contributor to the spread of infection in hospitals by the 'superbug' MRSA, according to new research. The study also found that increasing measures to prevent infection -- such as improved hygiene and hand washing -- appeared to have only a small effect on reducing MRSA infection rates during the period studied.

MRSA -- methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus -- is a bacteria that causes hospital-acquired infection and is resistant to all of the penicillin-type antibiotics frequently used in hospitals to prevent and treat infection. It can cause serious infections of the skin, blood, lungs and bones.

The researchers -- led by St George's, University of London -- tracked MRSA infection over 10 years from 1999 to 2009 at St George's Hospital, looking at how it has adapted to survive in a hospital environment and at factors that affected its prevalence. They found that a significant drop in MRSA rates coincided with a reduction in hospital prescriptions of ciprofloxacin, the most commonly prescribed antibiotic of the fluoroquinolone family.

Over a short period of the study, ciprofloxacin prescriptions fell from 70-100 daily doses for every thousand occupied beds to about 30 doses. In the same period, the number of patients identified by the laboratory to be infected with MRSA fell by half, from an average of about 120 a month to about 60. Following this, over the last two years of the study both the drug prescription level and MRSA rates remained at these reduced levels. Symptoms of MRSA infection can range from very mild to severe, but it is not known how many of the cases examined in the study were serious.

The study -- published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy -- looked at whether other factors such as improved infection control measures may have contributed to this decrease in infection. However, during a four-year period when more stringent infection control policies were introduced -- including improved cleaning and hand washing, and screening patients for MRSA on arrival at hospital -- the only major reduction in MRSA infection rates coincided with the reduction in ciprofloxacin prescriptions.

Lead author Dr Jodi Lindsay, a reader in microbial pathogenesis at St George's, University of London, said: "Surprisingly, it wasn't hygiene and hand washing that were the main factors responsible for the decrease in MRSA in the hospital. Rather, it seemed to be a change in the use of a particular group of antibiotics. Hand washing and infection control are important, but they were not enough to cause the decrease in MRSA we saw."

Dr Lindsay said the study suggested that MRSA relies on ciprofloxacin -- and fluoroquinolones in general -- to thrive in hospitals, as well as penicillin-type drugs, which was already assumed. The fluoroquinolone group of antibiotics have a similar enough mechanism of action to assume that the effect would be the same for them all.

She added that the findings suggest the most effective way to control MRSA and other hospital-based superbugs is to continue finding alternative ways to use antibiotics, rather than simply focusing on infection control techniques.

As well as identifying factors that influenced prevalence, the researchers identified the strain of MRSA that has become dominant. This strain -- CC22 -- has thrived by developing and maintaining multi-drug resistance, and becoming more fit to survive on hospital surfaces than other strains.

Dr Tim Planche, consultant microbiologist at St George's Healthcare NHS Trust and one of the co-authors of the study, said: "The Trust currently has infection rates among the lowest in London, having successfully driven acquisitions down over the past five or six years using a combination of both tough hygiene regimes and careful selective use of antibiotics. These findings, however, provide valuable insight and certainly warrant further investigation, which could lead to the development of even more effective infection control strategies in future."

Dr Lindsay said that studying the dynamic of how MRSA bacteria strains continue to evolve in hospitals in response to changing practice and interventions, such as infection control and antibiotic prescribing, will be essential to determine which interventions work, which are cost effective, and which are likely to have the best long-term outcomes.

She added: "But it seems that we now have an excellent opportunity to control superbugs in hospitals by re-examining how we prescribe antibiotics and ensuring we're using them in the most effective way possible."

Romney: 'Victims' comment not elegantly stated

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) ? Republican Mitt Romney is trying to head off a new distraction for his campaign after a video surfaced showing him telling wealthy donors that 47 percent of all Americans "believe they are victims" entitled to help from the government that permeates their lives.

At an impromptu news conference Monday, Romney offered no apologies, conceding the comments were not "elegantly stated" and were spoken "off the cuff." The Republican presidential nominee said the remarks showed a contrast between President Barack Obama's "government-centered society" and his belief in a "free-market approach."

"Of course, I want to help all Americans, all Americans, have a bright and prosperous future," Romney told reporters.

Obama's campaign pounced on the video, which was obtained by the magazine Mother Jones and released only hours after Romney's campaign outlined a new strategy to try to rejuvenate a struggling campaign. The video's emergence came as advisers to the former Massachusetts governor tried to reassure party leaders and donors about Romney's strategy amid concerns that the race could be slipping away.

"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what," Romney is shown saying in the video of a May 17 fundraiser in Boca Raton, Fla. "There are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it."

Romney said in the video that his role "is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

In a 7-minute news conference with reporters before a fundraiser near Los Angeles, Romney did not dispute the authenticity of the hidden-camera footage, but he called for the release of the full video, instead of just the clips posted online. He sought to clarify his remarks but did not apologize when a reporter asked if he was concerned that he may have offended people.

"It's not elegantly stated, let me put it that way. I was speaking off the cuff in response to a question. And I'm sure I could state it more clearly in a more effective way than I did in a setting like that," Romney said.

About 46 percent of Americans owed no federal income tax in 2011, although many of them paid other forms of taxes. More than 16 million elderly Americans avoid federal income taxes solely because of tax breaks that apply only to seniors, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.

The video was the latest headache for Romney's campaign, which has tried to focus attention on a weak economic recovery and make the case that the Republican's business background would help spur the economy. In recent weeks, it has dealt with the fallout from Clint Eastwood's rambling conversation with a chair at the Republican convention and Romney's omission of the war in Afghanistan or thanks to the troops in his primetime convention speech.

The eruption of violence in Egypt and Libya last week prompted Romney to issue a statement assailing the Obama administration before it was known that an American ambassador and three other U.S. citizens had died in Libya, a move that generated criticism from Democrats and Republicans alike.

A series of polls have shown Obama with an edge nationally and in key battleground states, leading Republicans to implore Romney to give voters more specifics on how he would govern. The new approach aims to improve Romney's standing in the lead-up to the first presidential debate on Oct. 3.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina quickly issued a fundraising appeal based on the video, telling supporters, "If we don't come through for President Obama right now, this will be the guy making big decisions that affect us and our families every single day."

An Obama adviser said the Democratic campaign might use Romney's comments from the fundraising video in television advertisements. The official wasn't authorized to discuss campaign strategy publicly and requested anonymity.

Romney's campaign released a separate television ad, arguing that the president's policies "are making it harder on women." It cited unemployment and poverty statistics for women in an attempt to close the gender gap that has shown women favoring Obama.
