Drive Abroad in Your Own Car or Rent Car Abroad? | iraqmoratorium ...

Is it best to drive abroad in your own car or just organise a car hire abroad and pick it up after a leisurely trip by plane, boat ot train? That is pretty much the question I?m pondering for a trip I need to take with my wife and kids later this summer.

The truth is I?ve done both in the past and thoroughly enjoyed both options. I remember fondy travelling abroad in my own car with a bunch of friends when we were in our early 20s. Four guys travelling around continental europe was a lot of fun and really was an amazing adventure. It was easy for us to take on long drives, perhaps 8 hours in a day if need be. When you?re young and don?t know better it?s amazing how much you can do!

One great advantage of taking your own car is that you have a lot more freedom to travel more freely once you reach your destination. You?re also forced to navigate which in itself adds a knowledgeable dimension to your trip. By reading maps and planning the trip you get to know the country more intimately.

On the downside is that you arrive in a more fatigued state. Long drives really take it out of you and you?re likely to be tired on arrival.

I?ve also experienced the convenience of travelling by plane to my destination and picking up a hire car on arrival. I did this last year when I flew to Paris, France and then organised a Car Hire France that I was able to pick up at the airport. I didn?t have the time to drive down which would have been really cheap but it quick and I was pretty fresh when I arrived.

To be honest though, I?m taking small children on this trip I?m planning and I really think the long trip down would be a little too long. SO in this instance I think I?ll just hire a car when I get to France.
