Skiing is a great winter sport for all ages and fitness levels and thanks to the people of Maine Handicapped Skiing, people with physical disabilities can enjoy skiing after taking some free lessons.
Handicapped Skiing on Winter Trips
Providing over 3500 free lessons during the winter and summer months, Maine Handicapped Skiing (MHS) is one of the first places handicapped individuals turn to for the opportunity to ski, snowboard, and many other summer and winter sports.
While many with physical disabilites believe they will never be able to enjoy most of the outdoor sports those without disablities do, the folks of MHS are there to prove it is possible. Anyone ages 4 years old and older who wants to learn to Alpine and Nordic ski, snowshoe, golf, cycle, or paddle, MHS has nearly 400 volunteers who are ready, willing, and able to teach those wanting to learn.
Places to Ski in Maine
Maine Handicapped Skiing not only offers skiing lessons, but also offers snowboarding, snowshoeing, and other summer sports at several of Maine's top resorts including:
- Sunday River Outdoor Center- The Outdoor Center is located in Newry, Maine, and has winter activities consisting of skiing, snowshoeing, and even a sled dog adventure.
- Sugarloaf Mountain Resort- With over 1,050 acres for skiing and over 150 trails and glades, Sugarloaf has visitors busy from the time they wake in the morning until they close their eyes at night. Other summer and winter activities include: snow tubing, ziplines, skiing, music festivals, golf, uphill climb tournaments, and much more.
- Sunday River Ski Resort- This Maine Ski Resort is packed full of outdoor adventures including: geocaching, chairlift rides, ziplines, skiing, ATV tours, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and much more.
- Pineland Farms- Located in New Glouster, Maine, Pineland Farms sits on more than 5,000 acres of land which is used throughout the year for various activities including: tennis, mountain biking, skiing, skating, sledding, snowshoeing, trail running, and a whole list of other activities.
Other Lessons Offered by MHS
Maine Handicapped Skiing not only offers lessons in skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing, but they offer lessons in other outdoor sports such as: paddling, golfing, fly fishing, and cycling. People with disablilties are encouraged to contact MHS to set up lesson times to get them well on their way to competing in sports or just having a great time with family and friends.
