Working it out with DC Film graduate Aaron Mullins | Boston ...

September 18, 2012

Aaron Mullins is a man on a mission. Currently, his mission is finalizing the? premiere of Hard Fix, a Washington DC based web series he is producing as part of Rubacam Productions, which he created with fellow CDIA alum Tyler Colin Perry.?? Hard Fix is a political thriller set in Capitol Hill, a little something Aaron knows about from having worked eight years on Capitol Hill for two US Senators before graduating from CDIA DC Campus in 2011 with? a certificate in Digital Filmmaking.

We caught up with Aaron in between meetings and editing sessions while he graciously sat still long enough to answer our questions:

Q:?What got you interested in the filmmaking as a career?
A:? I always had an unusual obsession with movies and TV. My family didn't have a television while I was growing up, so I used to seek out friends in the neighborhood who did...guess you could say I was a bit of a Machiavellian kid in that sense. I'd also have to point to my dad's side of the family, who are of Irish decent. My grandfather was a great story teller, my father is a really great story teller, so I think it got passed along in the genes.

Q: How has CDIA helped you to become the filmmaker you are today?
A: When I decided to change careers, I knew that I needed to learn the skills that would enable me to become a filmmaker. I had read a lot, but didn't have the hands on experience.? CDIA was perfect...they put a camera in my hand the first day, and we were shooting / lighting our first scenes in a matter of weeks. All the instructors were currently working in the industry and gave us valuable, real life knowledge / expertise. There's rarely a day that goes by that I don't use some form of filmmaking tool that I learned at CDIA.

Q: How has life been post-CDIA?
A: After graduating, I partnered with a fellow graduate, Tyler Colin Perry, to launch a new entertainment and branding company, Rubacam Productions. In addition to the web series, we are working with several business clients on branding and advertising videos, as well as developing new scripts for TV and the web. Never a dull moment

Q: Tell us about the project you are working on now
A: We're currently producing a new Washington D.C based web series entitled, Hard Fix. It's a political thriller / action story about an Irish pub owner of Capitol Hill who, through a series of events, is hired by the cities political power elites to sweep their dirty laundry under the rug. We're launching the pilot episode by the end of October!

It's really a CDIA family project. We have a core production team of three other CDIA film graduates (Tyler Colin Perry, Dave Campbell and Sean Sonnenberg) as well as? CDIA instructor (Ross Stansfield). In addition, we partnered with several current CDIA film students who worked as crew, as well as current CDIA web design students who created the website www.hard-fix.com In addition, our official photographer is a good friend and CDIA photo alum, Stephanie Bragg.

Q: What advice can you offer someone considering a career in filmmaking?
A:?Well, I guess I'd start off by saying filmmaking of any kind is a marathon, not a race. That's important to understand. It's really a series of problems that need to be solved, so you'll need to stay focused on the end goal, make quick decisions and learn to work with others. Learn to listen and be willing to make mistakes, every day in this business you should be learning something new, sharpening the skill set. On top of that, create every day, watch every movie possible, remain an observer of human nature and be willing to go anywhere to shoot a scene. But when it's all said and done, have fun. It's the greatest job in the world if you're willing to work hard and trust in a bit of luck!
