On 1st of May, 2011, a girl (name withheld) was raped at the Security Village, Uyo a place barely where former Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Eunice Thomas, hurriedly forced children from the CRARN Children Centre, Eket to barely week to her to her exit from the Ministry.
Checks with the children jam-packed at the un-spaced new abode revealed that this particular male staff, from the Ministry Of Women Affairs was in the
?habit of sending this particular girl to fetch water to the bathroom for him.
Some of the older boys sensed this girl had become something more than just an errand girl. The girl could not also complain for fear of further or future victimization.
On this fateful day, the children were spoilt to put a stop to the sordid affair. The staff member was caught pants down and alarm was raised.
The children demonstrated the whole of that night and the issue was swept under the carpet by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare. No arrest has been made so far. All through the night, the children kept screaming, "Mma Commissioner must hear this today". Observers have therefore asked many questions which some: Where is the Mma Commissioner today that the children are being raped? Where will she be when these children start getting pregnant? Where will she be when more things begin to happen??
?The issue has reported to the Chairman and some members of the Commission of Inquiry on Witchcraft Accusation and Child Abuses for their notice child right groups. Also a petition has been sent to the Commissioner of Police Akwa Ibom State to commence investigation.
This is one case exposed what of the many others that have been swept under the carpet! Undoubtedly, checks also reveal that sex between the children during the window period of 7pm and 8pm when the lights are turned on remains unimaginable.
It is a sad day to behold, as the future looks gloomy for these children. God save the Children!
